The first thing I was ever paid to write was a weekly newspaper column called Scenes From Real Life. I wrote this column for my hometown newspaper for four years. My writing was very popular in my community, so I branched out and wrote similar non-fiction stories for larger regional newspapers and magazines. I began writing fiction in my early twenties, choosing the romance genre because that was what I enjoyed reading. From 1986-2007, I worked at my hometown, daily newspaper. In 2000, I became the paper's composition supervisor. In 2007, I left the newspaper and now freelance as a newspaper, magazine and book layout designer. My husband and I still live in our hometown, because we both enjoy the pace of small town living.

Whether it was a place, pictures or music, I can usually rekindle the fire of my story by going back and becoming immersed in it again. Another thing that I do when I stall out on a certain scene is to move past it and write a scene that's further into the story. That happened with the last book, and I realized that I was stalled out on the earlier scene, because it didn't work and needed to be deleted.(less)

“One thing I always admired about Daddy was the way he could bounce back from adversity. From the very beginning of his life, he’d had more than his share of broken dreams and disappointments. He lived through the Depression, a war, a couple of failed businesses and the deaths of two wives, but he always found a way to pick up the pieces and go on.
When I’ve hit low points in my own life, I could hear his voice in the back of head saying, “Baby, you’ve got to roll with the punches.”
L.K. Campbell, The Life & Times of a Boomer Baby

A Psalm of Life

Tell me not in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.

Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou are, to dust thou returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each tomorrow
Find us farther than today.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.

In the world's broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!

Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act, - act in the living Present!
Heart within, and God o'erhead!

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints
on the sand of time;

Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o'er life's solenm main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.

Let us then be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.”
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Voices of the Night

“If you love what you do and are willing to do what it takes, it's within your reach. And it'll be worth every minute you spend alone at night, thinking and thinking about what it is you want to design or build. It'll be worth it, I promise.”
Steve Wozniak
