R. L. S. Hoff is a writer of mostly young adult sci-fi and fantasy. She lives in a multi-cultural household where she often has to remind one child that he must learn English because it's important for life in the US and the other two children that they must learn Mandarin because it is and always will be their brother's native language. When she's not writing or working at (so far) more profitable gigs, she enjoys reading, gardening, and baking bread. ...more

Hmm. My Kindle usually sends the reviews directly both places.

After checking--my review is showing up on Amazon.com (in the US), but not on Amazon.co.uk. (the bookworm review on the UK site is also not showing on the US one). I'm not sure why that's the case. Maybe in my review settings on Amazon.com? I'll try and look into it later today.(less)

Quiet when I wanted it, company when that felt better. I can't imagine anywhere better.

The Crossover

Cover of The Crossover by Kwame Alexander--silhouette of a boy twirling a ball made of words on one finger

The Crossover, by Kwame Alexander, is a gorgeous novel in verse. In lyrical language it sings…and seduces…and transports.

In fact, The Crossover is a bit magical. I know that, because partway through reading it, I imagined I actually wanted to get out and play basketball.

Anyone who knows me will understand the magic of this. I’m hardly what you’d call a sports person. I’m uncomfortable with any le

Enjoyable & Well-written

Emerald is a fascinating character. She's a great friend, an even better parent, and a person of more courage than most. It's wonderful to see how she navigates the convoluted problems in this book.

The witchcraft seems fairly

“You should have her come talk to me. I know it's hard to buck the system, but if we artists don't do it, who will?”
R.L.S. Hoff, Leaving Hope

“Borsk watched Anya scoot away from the shuttle stop, her legs moving as fast as the blades on his family's restaurant's salad chopper. She was surprisingly speedy for a short girl.
And surprisingly nice for a rich one. He wished he hadn't seen how respectful she was with Old Greeley, or how anxious she was to avoid special treatment, in both the greenhouse and out on the suspension bridge. He wished he hadn't seen the way her whole face lit up when anyone praised her art. He especially wished he hadn't seen her manage to seem disappointed, not relieved, when her dating pool color didn't match up with VJ Brown's.
He wished he could keep thinking of her as a stuck-up rich kid.
Then maybe he wouldn't feel so bad about totally ripping her off.”
R.L.S. Hoff, Leaving Hope

“You're not crazy," Darvian said. "You're merely dealing with realities you haven't faced before.”

“In many ways, what we do is a shadow of what's real. Politics can protect ordinary things and sometimes improve ordinary things, but it's the ordinary things that are important.”
R.L.S. Hoff, Songs of Healing

“Even as he said, "Are you crazy child?" the black sinuous creature rose on wings of glittering purple and sprouted fresh green flames.”
