Kelly Vincent wrangles data weekdays and spends the rest of her time playing with words. She grew up in Oklahoma but has moved around quite a bit, with Glasgow, Scotland being her favorite stop. She now lives near Seattle with three cats who help her write her stories by strategically walking across the keyboard, with her first novel, Finding Frances, a fine example of this technique. She’s working toward a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing at Oklahoma City University’s Red Earth program. Find her at kellyvincent.net and @kvbooks on Twitter and Instagram.

“The whole reason lipstick and blush came into being was that when a woman is sexually aroused, her lips and cheeks get redder. The first women to wear lipstick were prostitutes, to better attract clients. And eye makeup makes eyes stand out more, right? This had to be related to the fact that mammal babies have proportionally oversized eyes. So, what—were women trying to make themselves look like sexually aroused babies? Why? Why was this the norm? Why was I the freak for not doing it? Society was really fucked up.”
Kelly Vincent, Ugly: An honest and heartfelt YA novel about a gender nonconforming teen
