Mark Abel is an architect by trade but has dreamed of becoming an author over most of his life. Graduating from Arizona State University, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture in 1980, Mark began his career working for three prestigious design firms before starting a practice of his own in 1987 which continues to the date of this writing.

It was in Mark's first year of college when he discovered his love for writing and recalls how proud he was when his English professor announced Mark's first paper was the best in the class. That was just before he mentioned the grade received was a D- as he threw all of the papers into the trash. His professor then sat on the edge of his desk, opened a magazine, and began to read a mesmerizing

That's because I'm a 'Pantsner' which means I let the story tell itself and so I begin to wonder if it will. But so far, once I start typing the gates seem to open and it flows. In answering the question I would say start writing. You can always toss the scene or save it for another book. Besides writing is never a waste of time, I realize as I write this to you.

Coffee comes to mind also. Another cup is always good if your looking for a meaningful reason to procrastinate for another few minutes. I think I'll grab a cup, take care. (less)

Be it, constructing a building or a set of drawings, raising a child or climbing the tallest mountain you can find. And any challenge, once engaged is worth the effort and should be rewarding. Not only in seeing the completed task or product, but more so in the adventure of working through the process, learning something new and the joy that follows.

But answer the question Mark! Okay, for me, the best thing about writing is painting a story while offering an invitation for others to enter, to engage with and be moved by. Possibly bringing a tear, a laugh or maybe the quickening of a heart beat. Now think about this. In writing, one has a unique opportunity to whisper into another persons mind, share a secret, scare them, or show them something they may have never imagined. In fact writing may be the most intimate form of communication between two persons who know each other, and certainly it is for those who have never met. And to have someone enter your story and read what you written, now that is quite an honor.

– Second Chances –

Early this year, Rapid River Magazine, a well established arts and culture publication located in North Carolina, asked if I would be interested in writing a monthly column for them. But there was one condition, I would write about anything I wanted. Thinking it over for two seconds I said, “Absolutely”, and decided to call it, ‘Ponder This’. The following is from the March issue, titled: Second C

“Standing on the sea of glass was somewhat like walking on water. It was a humbling experience, even for an angel. The motionless surface reflected the kaleidoscope above, constantly moving in waves that swelled and yielded in response to the ever-singing cherubim. Sky song reminded him of the ocean, rising and falling, crashing and then gathering again. Today it was cool, smelling sweet and crisp, like honeysuckle. He stood in wonder, basking in the song of joy. Yes, that was it—soft joy radiating from the sky and reflecting up from the sea in which he stood.”
