Mother Parker Bonus Epilogue #2: That's What Fathers Do

The below bonus takes place 2.5 years after the end of Mother Parker and a 1.5 years after the bonus epilogue.

2.5 years later

Felicity opened the courtroom door and waited until all three of us were through before she followed us out into the bright Mayberrian sun.

“So? How do we all feel?” she asked with an elevated cheery disposition as she often did for his benefit.

I turned to Hwan.

His smile was as infectious as I imagined mine was. It hurt my fucking cheeks.

He was wearing his more modest hair today, the silver wig. Felicity had advised on an even more modest color, but I’d refused to let him hide who he was and who I’d fallen in love with.

And who Levi had fallen in love with.

After all, he was the most important person in our lives now.

“I feel heavenlicious!” Hwan said, waving his hands in the air in front of him as if he was reading a sign in the sky. “What about you Levi?”

I looked down at the little doe-eyed dude between us, barely three and a half feet staring up at Hwan as if he was his everything.

I guess now he was.

Well, he had been for a long time.

We both had.

“I feel…” he put his little fingers under his chin and hummed for a second. “Splendidity”

Hwan gasped, bent down, picked Levi up and the little man filled my eardrums with laughter that filled my soul with more happiness than I could have ever imagined.

“Splendidity? I love feeling splendidity,” Hwan repeated over and over and I stood there admiring my…

My family.

That was what we were.

It was what we’d been for a long time, only now it was official.

Who would have told me two years ago that when we decided to go on this crazy adoption journey that the little black kid, broken by life before he’d even lived it, would become part of us. Part of our life.

Little Levi whose mother was sick and whose father was a monster. Who’d been so traumatized by the abuse and the neglect he couldn’t even talk for the first week he’d stayed with us and when he finally did his words were jumbled and quiet.

That was how this little game had started. Of taking words and making new ones. It was for Levi’s benefit. To make him feel more confident and less self-conscious when he screwed up.

And now that little five-year-old kid from the “wrong part of town” as people liked to remind us as if race, wealth or the family you were born into determined who you were and the kind of life you could live, was a smiley, wonderful seven-year-old kid who laughed too much and sang too loud.

“How do you feel, Pukah?” Levi asked me and both he and Hwan were staring at me, hanging on my lips.

They looked so adorable together I didn’t know if my heart could take so much beauty.

Some days I still couldn’t believe this was all happening to me, dickhead Officer Grumpy-pants who turned everything he touched to shit.

“I feel happy-randy,” I said.

Both opened their hands and welcomed me into their embrace and I could just about burst.

“Are you okay, Pukah?” Levi pointed at the tears running down my cheek.

I hadn’t even realized I was crying.

Pukah.

It might be a silly mispronunciation of my name, but now it had more meaning than anything else I’d ever been called.

It meant guardian, memories, laughter, sleepless nights, endless worry, uncertainty, frustration, fulfillment, happiness.

There hadn’t been a single emotion since we started fostering him that it wasn’t associated with.

But most of all, to Levi, it meant dad. And that was the only thing I wanted to be in my life.

“I’m more than okay, Levi. I love you.”

Levi smiled and hugged me again.

“I love you too, daddy Pukah.”

Fuck!

Just when I thought I was done crying…

“What did you call me?” I asked.

Levi glanced from me to Hwan and lowered his eyes.

“Apa said you’d like it. I’m sorry,” he said.

Hwan sulked along with Levi and I couldn’t help but laugh.

“Apa was right.” I glanced at Hwan. “I love it, Levi.”

He looked at me once more and his eyes went wide as did his smile.

I hugged the little man. I hugged my son.

“Oh god, you three are going to make me melt you’re so cute,” Felicity said, waving a hand in front of her face as she tried to compose herself.

“You, missy, are my favorite person on this planet!” I told her.

Hwan coughed. Levi did too, mimicking his apa.

“Fine. You have a point. Third favorite person.”

Felicity brought her hand down to my shoulder and winced at the impact. “I’ll take it! Damn, do you ever miss a day at the gym?”

I laughed.

“Sometimes, but I make up for it with Hwan.”

Hwan gasped and slapped my arm.

“Hey!”

He pretended to be shocked for Levi, but he couldn’t hide the amusement in his face.

“What do you mean, daddy?” Levi asked.

My eyes went wide and I stopped breathing for a second.

“He just means I chase him around the house so he exercises that way,” Hwan said.

“Okay, enough. Should we make our way? Halmeoni will be expecting us,” I said.

It wasn’t just Halmeoni actually. It was the whole gang. Our entire extended family. Ash and Maddox, Joey and Santi, Slade and King, and all the rest of my brothers in arms.

But Hwan didn’t know that. And neither did Levi.

“Yeah, let’s go. Let’s go. Can we get bubble tea on the way?”

I rolled my eyes, laughing.

“You truly are your apa’s son,” I mumbled.

“Oh shush. As if you’re not a tea addict. What would you like today Levi?”

“I don’t know. Maybe taro and melon?”

“Ooh, I like the way you think, little one.” They walked ahead of me, toward the car and I admired them for a moment.

It was hard to believe this was real. That all the torment, stress and pain was over and this was real. That Levi was our son. That we were officially his fathers.

“Daddy? Are you coming?” Levi turned and watched me.

Daddy.

Pukah.

Whatever he wanted to call me, I’d always come to his aid. I’d follow him to the end of the world to protect him.

Always.

Because that’s what dads do!

His intense gaze and aggressive, dominant, and possessive streaks feel like a lasso pulling me toward him.It only takes so many shared showers and locker room encounters before I’m too weak to continue resisting this pull. But we both know there is no future for us. Our ambitions have always left a trail of ruin and heartbreak in their wake. Why should this time be any different?Except I can’t think straight when he’s around. And every private moment we share makes me forget why I’m even here in the first place.Crossing Blades is the first book in Hayden Hall’s Arctic Titans of Northwood U series of gay, college hockey romance novels. Expect fiery encounters on and off the ice, bickering enemies with a single, steamy way to vent, a second chance at greatness and love, and the emotional rollercoaster of self-discovery, acceptance, and growth into adulthood. Cat's Chance in Hell by Meghan Maslow

And when my boss is unhappy, all of Charm City burns. That’s where I come in. Intel is my specialty and leads me to the doorstep of one drop-dead gorgeous but annoyingly secretive Rakshasa.Bengal Damon-Cowles—even his name is obnoxious—runs South-West Baltimore and is nothing if not frustratingly contrary. I don’t care if he is a demi-god among shifters, I don’t need the complications from a sexy as sin Rakshasa with the utter gall to turn down a fine piece of feline-fantasy like myself. Especially when we’re forced to work together. Except, every day we spend in close proximity turns up the heat between us.A roomful of secrets, a looming Nor’Easter, and friends with questionable—or nonexistent—morals, add gasoline to the blaze. As the stakes climb ever higher, and people start dying, I’ve got a cat’s chance in hell of coming out of this one unscorched.Cat’s Chance in Hell is a 113k snarktastic, size difference, forced proximity, enemies-to-lovers, car-careening-out-of-control romance with a guaranteed happy ending and lots of steam. Shenanigans include: a catnapping gone very, very wrong, a hot pot incident that will go down in infamy, and a Rakshasa with more layers than a Smith Island Cake.*Can absolutely be enjoyed as a standalone, but would be more enjoyable read in order.

Blue Blood by L.C. Davis

If three's a crowd, what does that make four?My love life, apparently. Now I'm on the run with Cyrus, Sam, and Alex, and that's not even accounting for the fact that I'm pregnant—with twins—and my overbearing mother is along for the ride.Oh, and did I mention I found out Zeus is my father? Yeah, that Zeus. Turns out Cameron's not the only one who's been hunting me down. And I might have to rely on my not-so-absent dad to protect me from the relentless vampire who's probably the father of my children. Can you get a bulk discount on paternity tests? Because I'm going to need around half a dozen to sort this shit out.-Blue Blood is the third book in the Godbearer series, which should be read in order.

Red by KC Kean

The deepest voice that makes my insides melt, a searing hot touch from the campus playboy, and the stormy gaze of the world's biggest jackass.Along with them, comes a deeper exposure into the Featherstone life. Greed by Fel Fern

Jumpy investigator Quentin never expected a small town single dad to be his biggest weakness. Or welcome him into his family. On the hunt for a lead in small town Darlington, Quentin instead finds Leo, a broad-chested shifter alpha. Good Girl for the Bikers by Stephanie Brother

When three outlaw bikers call me their good girl, it makes me want to do bad, bad things. From the outside, our family was perfect. My father, a strong, god-fearing widower who gracefully married a single mother with a troubled son, and me, his dutiful and obedient daughter. But behind closed doors, he ruled with an iron fist. Father’s word was law, and I did exactly what I was told because it kept me safe and it was all I knew.My stepbrother Crash never learned that lesson. He was born too wild to keep his head down or his mouth shut, and I loved him for it desperately. Right up until we shared one hot, forbidden kiss—my very first—and father saw it.It was the last time I saw Crash. He ran and never looked back, at least not until now. Rolling into town on his motorcycle with a Screaming Eagles MC patch on his back and flanked by his brothers-in-arms, Preacher and Devil, he’s older, stronger, sexier and ready to raise hell.I’d expected Crash to get my blood rushing and my heart pumping—I never thought that Preacher and Devil would make me feel the same way.Preacher is sinfully seductive, confident like a stalking tiger. Even when his silky voice is soft, there’s no hiding the deadly steel underneath. He could tempt an angel into his bed, and I’m just a woman who goes weak in the knees when his lips caress my ear and he calls me his good girl.Devil is the kind of man who won’t ask why you need him to help bury a body, only how deep. His unflinching loyalty to his brothers in the MC makes me long for someone to feel that way about me. And when he does, he makes me feel like the center of the whole universe, worshiping me with the kind of skill that makes me beg for mercy and then go back for more. And Crash is the forbidden stepbrother who kissed me and vanished. As passionate and impulsive now as he was as a boy, he’s grown into a man who’s done running and is back to take what he wants—which is me. When he does, he puts my naive fantasies to shame. He’s all in on life, and that includes our bed. Or anywhere else.My father has promised my hand in marriage to a man I detest, but Crash, Preacher and Devil aren’t having it. They steal me away and then all hell breaks loose. Because my father has a fury of biblical proportions, my creepy fiancé has lethal plans all of his own, and when the dust settles, someone’s going down.GOOD GIRL FOR THE BIKERS is a motorcycle club reverse harem romance with a happy ever after ending. It's book 5 in the Screaming Eagles MC Series of standalone romances with characters who continue to make appearances.

Rhys Recommends - July Edition

Look, not gonna lie, but July? It fucking rocked!

Because...

I ready, like, 17 books you guys.

That never happens.

Not even in the before times. I don't think I've ever read as many books as in July. And I enjoyed every second.

I've also had to face reality. I'm an audiophile anonymous and I'm an addict.

Anyway, I couldn't possibly share all 17 books I read, but they were all amaze-balls and here are my top recommendations.

(the links below are Amazon affiliate links which means if you buy, borrow, or read any of these books I will make small commission. I fully support these books and really enjoyed them so my opinions have not been bought.)

1. They Told Me I Was Everything by Gregory Ashe

What can I say about this book? It took me by surprise and once I was locked in I was in for the ride. With phenomenal writing, a great cast of characters that felt real to the bone and a mystery that will keep you guessing 'til the very end this was one hell of a ride.

But be warned: This is not a happy ever after. This series has 4 books and from what I gather Auggie and Theo are going to go through a shitstorm before they get their happily ever after and I'm here for it.

Tropes: teacher/student, opposites attract, hurt/comfort

The best part is Book 1 is free!

2. Wormwood Summer by Kai Butler

Oh boy. Are you in for a world of wonder with this one.

The San Amaro Investigations series made me lose my mind I tell you. I've already read the first 4 books and just started the 5th because IT IS THAT GOOD. Like you wouldn't believe.

Kai Butler has not only crafted a fully-realized world that feels lived in, but her writing is top notch as is her storytelling. From page one there is no doubt you're reading an urban fantasy and you'll be pleasantly surprised with how far she's willing to go with each book.

What I loved the most was Parker's fae powers and the way they spring from the page and feel both original and fun. His romance with Officer Nicholas King is just the sweetest too.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Start your addiction now.

3. Top Secret by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy

This has been on my TBR since it came out and I'm ashamed to say I only just got to it but I didn't regret it for a moment.

I'l be honest. I expected something completely different from this book, but what I got was one epic romance. But then again what else could one expect from the likes of Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy?

4. Sink or Swim by Maz Maddox

Of course I couldn't go another month without reading a RELIC book. This is book 2 in the series and if possible, I loved it more than book 1. It's got enemies to lovers vibes, a heist-like mission, a touch of insta-love and the broodiest cutie ever (Baha we ❤️ you).

I'm really savoring this series because it's too good, you guys.

5. The Best Men by Sarina Bowen and Lauren Blakely

Yes, I read another Sarina book this month and I don't regret it one single bit. This one was co-written with Lauren Blakely and it's right what it says on the package. Best Men who fall for one another.

It starts as an arrangement. It starts as just a physical thing but it turns into so much more.

This was so good I gobbled it up in one day (actually the same day I listened to Top Secret) and it left me feeling all the feels. These guys were hotheads but damn they were good together.

6. Borrowing Blue by Lucy Lennox

Another one that's been on my TBR for an embarrassing length of time. Needless to say I binged the entire series this month and while I have my favorites, nothing beats Blue and Tristan.

This is insta-love, fake relationship, big families, banter, dogs, and everything I adore so you can't go wrong with this one.

And of course once you read one you'll want to read the whole damn series so...be prepared to sacrifice your sleep.

I hope you enjoy my recommendations and give some of them a chance.

If you've read them, let me know what you thought. Which one is your favorite? Can you even pick just one?

Happy reading!

Happy Best Friend's Day - #FlashFic

In honor of International Friendship Day I wrote a little something. Enjoy x.

“Happy best friend’s day!” I tell him, feeling the butterflies in my stomach flap their wings with vigor that could send me spinning if I let it.

But I don’t.

By now I’ve learned to control it.

I’ve had years of practice.

Years of looking into his eyes and biting the insides of my cheeks so hard I could taste the copper.

So much time of swallowing that knot in my throat wanted to come out, to speak, to say it aloud.

So many moments of heart palpitations that could have killed the healthiest man on the planet.

So indeed when the butterflies throw their tantrum in my stomach I’m not affected.

Or, to put it better, I am, but I don’t let it show.

I’m a pro, you see.

“Happy friend’s day, Cory,” he says and punches my arm in the gentle, brotherly kind of way that sends shivers down my hand and to the back of my neck.

He smiles brightly with that cocky grin he’s mastered all those years picking up girls in college, bars, clubs, buses and in video games, if you would believe it.

Apparently killing someone in a video game can lead to actual, very real life, sex.

Sex I have not been included in. Not ever.

Although I guess inviting your best friend to a threesome would never, ever, cross Harry’s mind.

But hey, a boy can dream.

Not that I would want to fool around with a girl, mind you.

Tried it, tolerated it, hated it, thank you very much.

And to be honest, even if it had crossed his mind and he ever invited me, do you think I’d do it? Seeing someone else ravish the man you’ve been pining over since you knew what was between your legs and inside your chest is not how I would want to spend precious time with Harry.

Oh, Harry.

Will I ever get over you?

“You need to stop being friends with him,” Nellie has told me over a hundred times.

She’s my business partner, by the way. In case you were wondering. You were not. Fine. Fine. Don’t bite me. I’m a mess. I’m just trying to compose myself and when that happens I overthink, overanalyze, overdo it.

We make pet adoption papers.

I know you didn’t ask, but that’s what we do.

We make adoption papers, birth and graduation certificates of puphood to adulthood. We zhuzh them up, add a hella lot of glitter, and then mail them to people with healthy treats and accessories.

Have you ever heard of book boxes?

What am I saying? Of course you have. You’re a reader. An avid reader, right?

So that’s what we do but with pet stuff—mainly puppies and kittens.

Fuck.

Shit. Sorry. I know. I’ve gone off topic.

It’s what happens when he’s close and I can’t function.

It’s my coping mechanism.

“Happy best friend’s day thank you very much. I’m not just a friend.” Oh but how wrong I am.

“Sorry.” He smiles and, yeah, well, my heart melts.

What do you expect? I’m a schmuck.

“Happy best friend’s day, then.” He makes sure to emphasize best because he knows details are my thing. And I pay attention to them.

I pull open my tote bag and take out the wrapped-red box.

I hand it to him and he shakes it beside his ear.

“You’re an idiot,” I tell him.

“Why?”

“Because.” Insulting him sometimes also does the trick of making my time with him more tolerable. “What if I got you a porcelain doll? You would have broken her.”

He grimaces.

“Well…did you?”

“Fuck no. Those things are creepy A-F.”

His grimace deepened.

“Besides, I only collect Barbies. I donated all my creep A-F porcelain dolls.” He says it so seriously that for a minute I forget he’s a player and I buy it.

Obviously, not for long.

I’m hopeless. I’m not an idiot.

“So?” I ask him.

“So?” he asks me.

Agh. He knows how to frustrate me. If only it was enough to make me move on.

“Are you gonna open the fucking thing or what?”

“Language, young man.”

“I’m the same age as you.”

He shrugs and tears through the perfectly wrapped paper.

“Oh, my God, Cory! Really?” he asks with big puppy dog eyes that make me sick.

Well, not sick sick, but you know. Sick with love and all that.

“Really!”

He lifts the box in front of his face and shows it to me as if I don’t know what I got him.

It’s a rare Star Wars Shadow Trooper Funko Pop. I had to kiss a lot of ass to get it—figuratively, get your head out of the gutter—and spend a lot of cash.

But he’s worth it.

“I love it. Thank you so much.”

He hugs me and as per usual I fight with my body for control. Because he smells so good. So divine. So manly. And he feels so soft and hard at the same time and in all the right places.

“You’re welcome.”

“Must have cost you a lot.”

I shrug it off.

Money is not a problem for me. Thanks to Tiktok we’ve gone viral so never a dull moment.

“Where’s mine?”

I don’t know when this best friend’s day became a tradition.

It must be around college. We did it as a joke once and it kinda stuck.

Of course when we were in college we tried to find the crappiest, wackiest, silliest gifts ever.

We got serious after that.

Well, I did.

“Oh…” he says.

“You forgot.” I raise an eyebrow and make sure he knows I criticize him.

I don’t particularly care. He does forget sometimes. But he always makes up for it by getting me something, even if it’s a month late.

“Well, not really.” His amused expression shifts and it takes me a moment to realize he’s being shy.

“Why? What is it?”

“Well…I wanted to tell you something.”

This is it. This is it. This is it.

The moment he’s realized I mean everything to him and he expresses his undying love.

I shake my head and with it the preposterous idea that he now loves me all of a sudden.

I should be far more composed by now but it seems even years of friendship and suppressing feelings doesn’t ever change that little shit inside me called hope.

“I met someone.”

Oh.

Well, there goes hope, I guess.

“And? Is that news? You always meet someone,” I tell him.

“Yeah, doh, I know. But they’re…different.”

“Don’t tell me they’re foreign, because I can list at least ten foreign exchange students you hooked up with in college.”

“No, idiot!” he flicks my forehead. “They’re a…a man.”

A what?

“Excuse me?” I ask, unable to hide the shock in my voice.

“Surprise! That’s my gift to you. I’m now officially bi. I mean, he was my first, but I liked it so it won’t be the last.”

“What?”

I must be hallucinating. All those dog shampoos I had made today must have made me woozy.

“Yeah. Aren’t you going to welcome me to the club?” he asks and opens his arms wide as if he expects a hug.

“H-how?”

“Huh?”

“How? How did it…you’ve always been with girls. I don’t understand how this…happened.”

Have I gone pitchy? I think I have. Oh fuck it. My world is falling apart. I can go soprano if I want.

He starts counting on his fingers. “A lot of beer. Like a lot. A handsome guy who was also very willing. And a game of dare.”

“That’s it?”

The butterflies stopped and I could feel them perish inside me.

“That’s it,” he says.

What has just happened? Did he really tell me he’s been with a man?

“Are you fucking kidding me?” I shout.

“What?”

“Are you. Fucking. Kidding me?” I repeat.

Gone are the flutters and the butterflies and the longing. It’s all replaced by anger. Hot, irrational, uncontrollable anger.

“Cory, what—”

“I’ve been in love with you since the moment I met you, been with you through everything, put up with all your fooling around with anything that walks that also has a vagina, hid my feelings because I didn’t want to ruin our friendship and this is how you repay me? You choose to hook up with a random guy you’ve just met over me?”

I am breathless by the time I finish. I used one breath to spout everything and now I can’t even stand up straight.

Thank God for that, though, because did I really just tell him I’ve been hopelessly in love with him all this time?

Fuck!

“Cory? What…what are you saying?” he asks.

I shake my head and turn my back on him.

“N-nothing. Forget about it. I was…I was just kidding.”

I try to walk away but he stops me by grabbing my shoulder.

“Do you mean it?”

He turns me around and I make an attempt at laughing it off.

“Of course not—”

“Do. You. Mean. It?” he shouts at me, matching my earlier intensity.

I don’t answer, I just look down. I can’t face him anymore.

I’ve gone and ruined everything.

“Cory…if you’ve been…why wouldn’t you say something?”

I shrug.

“I didn’t want to ruin our friendship. Guess that’s over now.”

Harry hooks his finger under my chin and lifts my gaze back to him.

His eyes are wide and glimmering, the green in them shining like emeralds.

“Cory, why wouldn’t you say it?” he stares at me and his brows furrow.

“Because…you’re straight,” I mumble. “Or were until a minute ago.”

He doesn’t respond. His eyes narrow and he cocks his head to the side.

“What?” I ask.

He doesn’t answer me. Just, stares. At me.

“Harry, what?” I shout now.

Some of my spit paints his face. I don’t care. I’m angry and embarrassed and…sad.

“I just…I never realized how beautiful your eyes are,” he says.

“What—”

And before I can even ask him what the hell he’s on about, he closes the gap between our lips and makes my every wish since I was eleven true.

I’m…

I’m kissing my best friend.

And he tastes good.

“Now that’s a gift.”
