Romance that Feeds the Soul

I’ve grown to expect outstanding quality whenever I read Brenda S. Anderson’s books, and her latest release is no exception. This time, she’s teamed up with her daughter Sarah Anderson to tell a story that moved me deeply.
Broken Together is about a woman whose husband was sent to prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Chad was convicted of killing his mentor and has spent the last eight years doing his best to survive in the brutal prison environment.
Jenn, left alone to raise their twins, has faced a struggle of her own, as their friends and church family turned their backs on her and her children.
But now fresh evidence has turned up and there’s a chance that Chad might be exonerated, or set free. Jenn never gave up hope that Chad’s innocence would be proved. But the events of the past eight years have shown that not all prisons are surrounded with gray walls. Chad’s release will be only the first step on a long road of healing.
This book kept getting better and better with every page I turned. I had no idea of all the things prisoners and their families go through, even when the prison term has ended. This a story that will stay with me for a long time.
Brenda writes the best kind of romance: a tale of love within the context of a wider story of God’s power to heal and restore the broken places inside each of us. Broken Together is available on Amazon.

Happy New Year!

What kind of year have you had? 2021 has been tough for many people I know. Some have faced life-changing hardships, including serious sickness, bereavement, job losses and relationship breakdowns. Others have received unprecedented blessings and joys. None of them knew what lay ahead as they flipped over their brand new calendars and stepped into the new year. My year has been a mix of the meh, the disappointing, the scary, and the “wow! Thank you, Lord!”
We don’t know what’s in store for any of us as we enter 2022, but what is for certain is that God is in control, He is good, and He loves us with an everlasting love. That is enough to keep me looking forward. Besides, I naturally like new things and fresh starts. And for that reason, I’m celebrating. So, happy new year to you!

This book kept me up half the night

Last night, I did something I haven’t done in ages: I read a book under the covers. Through the Lettered Veil by Candace West is such an outstanding story that I could not set it aside until I read to the last page. I was up until the wee hours, completely absorbed in this book.
The American Civil War has just ended, but bitterness and hatred still run deep in rural Arkansas. Lawless and brutal criminals roam the county, and it’s no time for a young unmarried woman to be on her own. So, when Aynsley O’Brien’s uncle is gunned down by a group of thuggish brothers, she’s aware of how precarious her position is.
Her uncle Stewart loved and protected her like a father, and he’s done his best to ensure her safety in the event of his death. He’s left her the fertile family farm, on condition that he marry within 30 days.
Meanwhile, Nolan Scottsdale returns from the war to find himself unwelcome at home. His mother is bitter because he chose to fight for the Union, which led to her husband being murdered by Confederate sympathizers.
Homeless and penniless, Nolan goes to the O’Brien home, looking for work. He meets his childhood friend Aynsley, the girl who broke his heart, and learns of her plight. A marriage of convenience might solve both their problems.
So begins this beautiful, page-turning tale which is, quite possibly, the best book I’ve read this year. I cannot rave enough about it.
Candace is part of the Mosaic Collection of Christian fiction authors, and this is her first release as part of the group.

A beautifully written, emotional ride

This week, I read an outstanding book. Well, I started reading it last week but only finished it today because it’s a hefty, meaty novel, my first by Mary A. Felkins.
I’ve said before how I especially like Christian romance with well-rounded characters facing realistic life dilemmas. Call to Love delivered that in spades. Ooh boy. What an emotional ride.
The book is about Tracy, an ER nurse, and Tom, a police officer. Both are excellent at their high-pressure jobs. But their hearts and their personal lives are a gnarly mess of brokenness. As a child, Tracy lost her cop father in the line of duty. She’s determined not to get close enough to anyone else to suffer the pain of loss again.
Tom’s trust has been badly burned. He grew up with a negligent, wayward mother, only to get mixed up with a woman who turned out to be a negligent, wayward mother to his son. Now a single father and a small town cop, Tom’s built walls around his heart. He still carries a simmering resentment and finds it hard to let go of past hurts and answer God’s call to love.
I really, really don’t want to give any more details because I’ll spoil the twists and turns of this story. But it was an excellent read, and I can’t wait to see what else Mary A. Felkins is going to come up with. Click here to find it on Amazon, and here for other online retailers.
