The sort of life portrayed in many post-apocalyptic books and films, for example Blade Runner or Mad Max is not only de-humanising, but also practically impossible!
I asked myself what a post-apocalyptic world might really look like. A world where the majority of a generation died would not be able to support the specialist technologies and skills required to provide huge amounts of energy and maintain the current level of technology. We should revert to a style of living like that prior to the industrial revolution, with whatever technology the few surviving scientists and engineers could reconstruct. With many fewer people to feed and house this need not be a terrible world of privation and fear. People would reorganise their societies, with likely different views on justice and politics than are currently the norm.
The other factor in the event of an apocalyptic event or disease would be that people would turn to religion. This, I think, is natural when man's power to control has been overrun. Once religion becomes important in the wider society it inevitably becomes enmeshed in politics, for example the medieval Catholic church, or the Taleban in today's Afghanistan.
Thus I have set Renaissance in a post-plague England. The pandemic has wiped out 90% plus of the world's population over the previous century. This England is basically an agricultural economy with some, limited, early twentieth-century technology.
The religiously divided geography sketched out would be possible in that situation. The political and social changes that might happen create the opportunity for a small and intense world, where politics is essentially personal and familial. Different factions in a small group of people drive the fate of the whole country.
This background gives me an interesting canvas to build an action adventure thriller series, of which Renaissance is the first. I have been inspired in style by John Buchan, The 39 Steps is one of my favourite books.(less)

Not a lot to write about over the recent past. Unlocked down Britain has been incredibly dull. The arrival of variants has been greeted with the hyperventilating hysteria that would be suited to Ebola but is a dash over the top for most of us faced with Covid. The trend to reach for the fascist solution of excluding a minority on health grounds and to coerce people to do things that they rationall
