J.P. Hostetler (Jake) is originally from Lancaster, PA in the United States.

An international career has allowed him to live in places like Germany, South Korea, and India - places that have directly impacted his work.

He writes about leaving the comfort zone and the vital importance of diversity: of culture, of biology, and of thought.

Though nomadic by nature, these days Jake can probably be found communicating with bears and trees in the San Gabriel foothills outside of Los Angeles, California.

Not well.

Sometimes I set a timer on my phone (for 60 minutes or 90 minutes) and don't let myself do ANYTHING except write until that timer beeps.

Sometimes I sit somewhere new, maybe outside or on a trail, and describe the setting around me to get the words flowing.

Mostly writer's block is just a lazy brain fighting back. So dealing with writer's block is similar to dealing with anything of that nature. You need to find the discipline with yourself and make the choice that your dream of realizing a book six months, two years, or fifteen years down the road is only what it is because you made the choice now keep writing. Beyond this, writing, at least for me, is about finishing what you started. It's becoming a medium for an idea which could someday touch the life of someone else. I think our connection through language, through written words, a thing which transcends time and space, is one of the most beautiful displays of our humanity. (less)

Pandemic thoughts...

I think we can all agree that 2020 has had a strange first half.

Call me overly optimistic but I feel the warmth off the light that I think is coming from the end of the tunnel...or that might just be the relentless west coast sun.

Either way, we're all ready for the return of even the smallest amount of normalcy.

I know for me and my family it's certainly been an exercise in coping with pressure Read more of this blog post »

One of the all time classics for me. Even though this is the quintessential 'chosen one' story, it is so enthralling that it doesn't matter.
