I've lived in the UK for 21 years now (I was born and raised in the US), and when I first came, I was put on a work visa by my company. Little did I know (until it was due to expire) that it was the wrong visa for the job I was doing. When it looked like I might have to leave the life I'd built in London, I did consider marrying my then-boyfriend in order to stay (which would have been a big mistake!) Luckily, my company admitted that they'd put me on the wrong visa, and because it wasn't me who had broken the rules, Home Office allowed me to transfer on to the correct visa. I'm now a British citizen (as well as an American one!) and that experience has really stuck with me. It makes me extremely sensitive and sympathetic to the many issues that immigrants face, especially now with the horrid deportations happening in the UK, and the precarious position of foreign nationals after Brexit. I know first-hand how desperate it feels to face leaving the country you love, and what I would have done to stay. (less)

Books I'm loving: We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler

View this post on Instagram Do you loan your books? I gleefully pressed this into the hands of a friend, but can't remember who it was, and I've missed it on my shelf ever since. So when I recently ran across it in a charity shop, I snapped up another copy because I loved it so much! From the description: Rosemary's young, just at college, and she's decided not to

“I had a friend in college who loved to say: 'If you can dream it, you can do it.' It became my mantra. I assumed it was a pearl of wisdom from some great thinker, a philosopher perhaps, like Descartes. It turned out to be Walt Disney, which in no way diminishes the wisdom of the advice. Anyone who can build a Magic Kingdom deserves to be listened to.”

“The only way cheese is dessert is when it's followed by the word cake.”

“So it's true, then, being in love is like hitting the sweepstakes. It doesn't happen to everyone, and there's no way of saying who's going to win, but it changes your life when it does.”

Ulrike Hey Michele, I loved Single and the City and can't wait to read Misfortune Cookie. Will this be available as print version, too? I could only find the kindle version on Amazon.

Michele Gorman Hi Jessica, yay, glad we're connected! I've just started to write my next book, which (very excitingly!) I'm writing with the help of readers. I'm asking questions about characters and plot (and title!) and there are almost 50 women already helping me. It's like a writing community where we can discuss aspects of the book as I write it - if you'd like to get involved you can go to the blog (michelegormanwriter.blogspot.com) and join in. If you add your email on the left of the blog you'll get a note each time we post a new question. You can also follow me on Twitter (@expatdiaries) or send facebook request (www.facebook.com/michele.gorman3) since I'll always post when a we start discussing a new question.

Thanks!
Michele x
