Michele Mattingly has always been drawn to Africa. Her most beloved childhood toys were giraffes. She created her version of Kenya in her backyard. Even as college, marriage, motherhood, and a career in teaching filled her days, she always dreamed of Africa.

At age 58, Michele planned a trip to Africa to take on the challenge of a lifetime: climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. In the tradition of "Eat, Pray, Love" and "Wild," "Before the Empress: Messages from Mount Kilimanjaro" chronicles one woman's journey up a mountain and into her soul.
