For me the best thing about writing has been the becoming more aware of certain details, patterns, threads and being able to process and weave them into coherent stories. Paradoxically, perhaps, writing allows me to immerse myself more fully in life. So for me, that's the best thing, together with being able to choose my working hours, my surroundings and not having to explain to anybody the amount of chocolate I consume at my desk.(less)

I tend to read more fiction than non- but here's a few...

I love anything Joan Didion writes and 'The Year of Magical Thinking" is a favourite I have read many times. Isabel Allende's "Paula" is just stunning and so fraught with love and pain that it made me think twice about becoming a mother. I like the thoughtfulness and honesty in Dani Shapiro's writing and have read both "Hourglass" and 'Inheritance" in one sitting. I really enjoyed "Eat Pray Love" and "The Glass Castle". "Angela's Ashes" is just fabulous.

Of course, I couldn't possibly have written my book without having read Wiesel's "Night", Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning", De Waal's "Hare with Amber Eyes" and Sand's "East West Street". They are all heroes mine.

But answering your question and writing this list makes me realise that I definitely need to read more comedy!!(less)

Simon & Schuster's trailer about my detective story

When I was a child in Caracas, Venezuela I longed to be a detective. Inspired by Enid Blyton's characters, by Nancy Drew and Encyclopedia Brown, I wanted a real mystery to solve.

What I didn't realise then was that the mystery was right in front of me, that I'd have to spend decades and cross continents to solve it.

The mystery was my father.

Here's a little trailer that Simon & Schuster made abou Read more of this blog post »

“If you want to be truly just in this life, when you see people who are weak, you must stand with them. Because you are strong, and it is the weak who need you more, not the strong.”

“…it was during a period he had so much time on his hands that he felt that time had stopped.

How could time have stopped?

‘Because,’ he said, ‘and you will understand this when you are older, sometimes you feel that everything around you has come to an end. You feel that you are completely alone, that time is frozen and that you are invisible. At first, you might feel exhilarated by the sense of freedom, but then you’ll be frightened that you are lost and you will never be able to go back.’

He explained that when he first felt this, he had been isolated and afraid and had prised open his watch case to verify that time was indeed passing. The rhythm of the watch might have been imagined. Sound was not enough, he needed to see and touch it. It was the first time that he had dismantled a mechanism. The turning wheels, ticking each second away, had reassured him.

It was then that he had comprehended the importance of time.”
Ariana Neumann, When Time Stopped: A Memoir of My Father's War and What Remains

“He had scraped his arms and legs, and reddened dirt had lodged in his cuts. Tomorrow, undoubtedly, the contusions would be obvious, but this was of no consequence. Hans seemed to be perpetually covered in bruises. He struggled with coordination and constantly walked into things, misstepping, losing his hat or scarf, or leaving his school books behind. He frequently fell off his bicycle. Organizing his body, his things, or his time was not a strength or,”

There exists a well
where clarity

We need to sit on the rim
of the well of darkness
and fish for fallen light,

“Things are not as easy to understand or express as we are mostly led to believe; most of what happens cannot be put into words and takes place in a realm which no word has ever entered.”
