When he learned about my background he told me I should write a book about my experiences. I never really gave it serious thought until years later. I was having Sunday dinner at my sister's house when I mentioned having read a book written by someone who used to do the same thing I did for a living overseas - "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man" by John Perkins - and being miffed about some of things in the book that I didn't agree with, although it could just be that Mr. Perkins and I just had completely different experiences working overseas. Knowing my background and that I had done the same type of work, my brother-in-law then told me I should write my own book and call it "The True Confessions of an Economic Hit Man". That's where I got the original idea and what gave me the impetus to start writing it. Then, as I was writing the book, I was asked to teach a graduate course in Negotiation and Conflict Management, and it occurred to me that I could incorporate the principles I used successfully in my own experiences to help bring the subject to life for my students. I couldn't do that without sharing the experiences with Saddam Hussein, Augusto Pinochet, Solange, and the nameless South American colonel, and as I started writing about those experiences they just became the central theme of the book, which is why the main title is "Postcards from SAddam". And, no, the capitalized letters in SAddam are not a mistake but explaining that would spoil what is, at least for me, one of the best parts of the book for anyone that hasn't read it. (less)
