Kelsey Quick never thought she was a writer until she stumbled upon the world of fanfiction just four years ago. Within 6 months, she had written 150k words and garnered a modest following filled with her people. People that not only understood her, but encouraged her to do (what once was) the impossible:

write the story that had been on her mind for nearly a decade—A Violet Fire.

What Kelsey thought she would be, however, is a manga artist, and spent most of her college

I never thought of myself as a writer since I had always been a traditional and digital artist growing up. I never really thought I could be both, especially when a couple of people voiced how much they didn’t like my writing. However, one day, while reading a particularly disastrous fan fiction I thought, “Surely, I can do a bit better than this...” That night I posted 1,000 words of my own fanfic and received quite a few views and urges to continue. 150,000 words and 6 months later, I started considering writing my own novel. :) (less)

“The night,” he repeats, his thumb stroking the skin of my stomach through the fabric of my dress. “That is precisely why people take my kingdom for granted. No one sees the darkness, and yet it’s everywhere. We are surrounded by an entire universe of it. It came before us, it will live on long after us. Even the stars might form and then die, but the darkness will always be there.”

“Mr. Ravenel is here on a business matter, and the tenants need his attention far more than we do.”
“But Kathleen,” Cassandra said in concern, “we mustn’t let him work himself into exhaustion.”
Kathleen burst out laughing. “Darling, I doubt he’s ever worked a day in his life. Let’s not distract him on his first attempt.”
Lisa Kleypas, Cold-Hearted Rake

“It had played out when, for reasons I don’t understand, I was unable to climb through the mirror and send out my sixteen-year-old self in my place. Until that moment she had always been there. No matter how much I appeared to have changed—how illustrious my education, how altered my appearance—I was still her. At best I was two people, a fractured mind. She was inside, and emerged whenever I crossed the threshold of my father’s house. That night I called on her and she didn’t answer. She left me. She stayed in the mirror. The decisions I made after that moment were not the ones she would have made. They were the choices of a changed person, a new self. You could call this selfhood many things. Transformation. Metamorphosis. Falsity. Betrayal. I call it an education.”
