D.F. Hart is my pen name for suspense & thrillers; I've never found my given name to be particularly suspenseful or mysterious, so when I opted to finally give in to the siren call of writing, using my initials felt as natural as breathing. (I write contemporary romance as well, and you can find out more here on Goodreads by looking up D. Faith Hart!)

I’d always intended to be in this career; a college professor somewhere, teaching Chaucer and Shakespeare, and writing fiction in my off time. However, life has a sense of humor, it seems. Before I even realized it, I found myself hip deep in

For me, it's never really been a full-blown case of writer's block (and hopefully I did not just jinx myself saying that.)

In my experience it appears as more of a thoughtful pause, and it's usually when I am trying to line out logically the next steps of the plot or story in my head while trying to remain true to both the story and reader expectations.

So, I will sometimes deliberately step away for a dew days; symbolically move what I'm wrestling with to the 'back burner', and turn my focus to other aspects, such as shoring up a pending marketing effort. Then I return to my writing and many times find my subconscious has sorted it out.(less)

The only thing better than that is being able to invite readers to join you in that world, and of course the icing on the cupcake is when you know they've enjoyed that world as much as you do.(less)

A tribute

We lost my Dad on Monday, July 8, 2019.

Tuesday afternoon we started the process of going through Dad's things. Found a manila packet, opened it, and hit my knees sobbing.

It was his collection of short stories and poetry he'd written back in 1994. I'd been looking for it for months now, and had been really upset that I hadn't been able to find it. I thought they were lost forever. Now, I have them. Read more of this blog post »

“Writing is a lot of work, but also an escape. A lot of tears and sweat go into a story, building believable characters, shaping the plot
so that the reader can’t wait to turn the page. Sometimes I’ll wake up at 3 a.m. with that perfect line that escaped me earlier in the day running through my head. But it’s worth it. And the brilliant part is, you get to create a little universe of your own. Anything can happen; there are no limits.”
