Ella Craig was born in Bristol and raised in South Gloucestershire where she trained as a lab technician.

Fancying a change, she moved to Devon and worked in call centres, shops, and as an office temp along with a brief stint as an artist’s model (she kept her clothes on).

She now lives on a farm in Bulgaria with her husband, three dogs, two cats and a flock of feral chickens.

Ella published her first novel, Sunday Girl, in March 2019.

Read as much as you can—not just the genres you really enjoy—and make a note of what you liked or disliked in the book. Ask yourself questions like:

• Did you love or hate a certain character and if so, why?
• Did the plot intrigue or bore you? Why?
• What were the main themes?
• Was the ending good/bad/indifferent?

And loads more. Some novels have book club questions at the back, which come in handy. Don’t ignore Fan Fiction—it is a great way to learn about different writing styles, and it’s fun.

Try to write every day. If you don’t have a story on the go, google writing prompts and practice timed writing. Some of these might spark a bigger idea or make a useful scene for your story.

With all this reading and writing, you need to keep a writer’s journal on your computer, mobile (cell) phone or in a notebook. Loads of examples on the internet but I like the bullet journal layout.

I am an obsessive planner and always use extensive outlines—usually covering 2 or 3 sheets of A4 (US= Letter) paper. I don’t always stick to it, but this stops me getting lost in my own book.

Accept the fact your first draft will be nowhere near perfect but don’t stress, you can tidy things up during the next few drafts.

Hope this helps!(less)

A sexy merman, a human woman, and clan warfare: What could possibly go wrong? Nothing from the point of the reader. Dive in and wallow in an aquatic love story that will have you believing in merfolk.

Sacrifice by S.A. Santos
"An unusual romance story...which is a good thing. It starts with Kat waking up drugged in an asylum. She can't think straight, and the nurse simply administers more sedatives. In dreams slash nightmares, she remembers bits from her father's funeral, " Read more of this review »
