Gillian Poucher was born in Bolton, England. Reading and writing were passions from an early age.

After studying History at undergraduate level, Gillian worked as a Solicitor before training as a church minister. She was ordained into the United Reformed Church in 2006 and completed her PhD in Biblical Studies in 2013.

Gillian lives in Lincolnshire with her husband and daughter and far too many books! After The Funeral is her first novel and fulfils that childhood ambition. The sequel A Question of Loyalty will be released on 1 October 2022.

I was chilled by an entry in an old black leather family Bible which referred to a nineteenth century female ancestor who 'killed her dauter'. It was an intriguing and tragic entry, and I had so many questions, including the obvious ones: 'Was it true?' and 'Why?' As I learnt more about infanticide as I grew older, I wondered whether socio-economic pressures might have led the mother to kill her (possibly illegitimate) baby daughter out of desperation. Or could a malicious relative have recorded the entry? Who knows?? (less)

I was very quickly immersed in the medieval world of Julian of Norwich, and found the psychological insights into this astonishing woman very convincing. Beautifully written and an excellent work of historical fiction.
