But the best thing I've experienced as a writer is handing my book to a reader who is in my target readership and seeing the child's excitement and delight. Yes. I wrote it for you. This is why I worked so hard to make this book a reality. To see the joy that just filled your face and to give you a safe place to travel and experience within the pages.(less)

Read. Read widely and read books in the genre you wish to write. See what other writers have done well and why their writing resonates with you.

Write often and about a great variety of things. You never know where you will find the story of your heart.

Take time to live in the moment and observe the world and the people around you. Visit creative and inspiring spaces. A story that resonates with others cannot be written in a vacuum. Allow yourself to write stream-of-consciousness pages that serve as a brain dump. It always helps to prime the pump before working on your current project, and you may even stumble across gold in those pages.

Give yourself permission to turn off your inner editor and just play with words. You can always go back and revise.

Most importantly, join a community of writers. You will benefit so much from the friendships and support of other writers who are either in the trenches with you or who are a little further along the publishing path. Take writing workshops to hone your skills. Form a critique group of writers you trust and share your work with each other--offering both praise and helpful critique. Writers need both.

Remember to take care of yourself and enjoy the journey. Don't worry about what has happened in the past or what the future holds for your writing. Focus on being the best writer you can today, and give yourself permission to grow and learn. Best wishes for you and your words!
