Brook Allen has a passion for ancient history—especially 1st century BC Rome. Her current work is a trilogy on the life of Marcus Antonius—Marc Antony, which she has worked on for the past fourteen years. The first installment, Antonius: Son of Rome was published in March 2019. It follows Antony as a young man, from the age of eleven, when his father died in disgrace, until he’s twenty-seven and finally meets Cleopatra for the first time. Book two, Antonius: Second in Command, will be published this fall and will detail Antony’s rise to power alongside the notorious Julius Caesar.

In researching the Antonius Trilogy, Brook’s travels have led her to Italy, Egypt, Greece, and even Turkey to explore the places where Antony once lived, fought,

Women didn't often have it easy in those days, so just showing up cold-turkey wouldn't even be safe. I'd also want to be certain I could return.(less)

I'm pretty serendipitous about my reading habits, but typically, it's historical. I'm not really a bit fan of historical romance, however.(less)

Sullivan is indeed a master and I enjoyed this book a great deal. Disclaimer: some parts are hard reading. Still, as a reader, if it costs me emotion, then its writing at its grandest.

“was impressed by Marcellus’s eagerness. Tomorrow he would be riding out with five legions to a war from which he might never return, yet there was only excitement in his voice. I thought of the dangers he would face and the painted Gallic fighters hiding in the thickly wooded passes. I was sure that Isis would never be so cruel as to abandon someone so young and filled with promise. But then why had she abandoned Ptolemy and Caesarion? Where had she been when Antyllus was murdered at the base of Caesar’s statue and my parents lost their kingdom to a thin, weak sapling of a man?”

“Warriors shape the world, not wizards, Helios. We don’t have soldiers. We don’t have generals. But we have the emperor’s ear. I want to protect Egypt and if I have to win the emperor’s trust to do it, I will.”

“Octavia may have shared in common their love for the emperor, or perhaps their dependence upon him, but their unity only ran so deep. They were not friends or companions by choice, but bitter rivals.”

“Agrippa may seem simple,” I protested, “but there’s a genius about him and not just with his military tactics. Have you seen his projects? The roads, the aqueducts, and the buildings! He can most certainly read.”

“I am entering on the history of a period rich in disasters, frightful in its wars, torn by civil strife, and even in peace full of horrors. Four emperors perished by the sword.” —TACITUS”

Brook Allen Fellow author, Linnea Tanner wrote a lovely review on my book, Antonius: Son of Rome, then wanted to interview me. The kindness authors share to one another is just one of the mind-blowing things about being a writer. Love my author friends!
