DiLeo is a high school English teacher in New York's Hudson Valley, and a horror/thriller novelist—he also has two coffins in his office. You know, for decoration . . . (Check out his photos to see a picture.)

Amazon reviewers are saying, “DiLeo’s horror skills are undeniable. He’s a master of suspense and understands the parameters and power of the monsters he’s created . . . [DiLeo’s] prose is first-rate and engaging . . . [It’s] like reading a horror movie . . . [With] deftly blend[ed] suspense, action . . . Dark, dramatic, and thoroughly chilling . . . [You’ll be] grabbed by the first page until the very last word . . . Disturbing and perturbing, and rampantly unsettling . . . [There will be] nightmares for a lot of us . . . DiLeo is def

There's much to recommend here. I underlined many, many passages in this text. That said, there is a long stretch where the author's arrogance is so palpable that I had to laugh in order to keep reading (perhaps his intention, perhaps not—as he point ...more

This is an engaging, quick read.

It's a fascinating glimpse into 1800s America, a time when utopias popped up all over the country and just as quickly collapsed, and the country was struggling to define itself.

Wels does a great job interweaving differ

Over on Twitter, I posted the following:

I think it was Joe Hill who said good writing should be "story and a little music," and that's why I'm reading Don't Fear the Reaper so slowly—the story is propulsive but the music makes me slow down and listen

This is an excellent, well researched examination of what American life really was since the 1800s to today. Coontz yanks off our rose-tinted glasses and disabuses us of our nostalgia for an imagined happier, simpler, fairer time.

“Horror itself is a bit of a bullied genre, the antagonist being literary snobbery and public misconception. And I think good horror tackles our darkest fears, whatever they may be. It takes us into the minds of the victims, explores the threats, disseminates fear, studies how it changes us. It pulls back the curtain on the ugly underbelly of society, tears away the masks the monsters wear out in the world, shows us the potential truth of the human condition. Horror is truth, unflinching and honest. Not everybody wants to see that, but good horror ensures that it's there to be seen.”
Kealan Patrick Burke

“The real horror is that when you're busy ruining your life, self-awareness doesn't stop you.”
Christopher Ransom

Joe Hill
“She breathed deeply of the scent of decaying fiction, disintegrating history, and forgotten verse, and she observed for the first time that a room full of books smelled like dessert: a sweet snack made of figs, vanilla, glue, and cleverness.”
Joe Hill, NOS4A2

Christopher Buehlman
“A mundane lie hiding an exotic truth is deception; an exotic lie hiding a mundane truth is storytelling. Deception may be necessary to preserve life, but storytelling makes life worth living.”
Christopher Buehlman
