Whispers in the Void, the first in my Descendants of Terra series, is the result of an immense amount of work. It started years ago as an idea, a project, started and stopped many times. But this year, I decided to make it a reality. I started calling it my thousand-hour project; it was a labor of love. I wasn't a writer, but I was someone with one hell of a story rattling around in his head that needed to be shared. So, I became a writer. I put in the work and leveraged the resources and people around me including bibliophiles, a graphic designer, a retired teacher, an English teacher, and a retired librarian. And many others. I poured my heart and soul into this project and committed to making it a professional endeavor. If you ask those around me, I can kind of be a monomaniac. So, I devoted that single-minded focus to making Whispers in the Void a reality. And I am proud of the result.

I envisioned a "real" science fiction universe. One where you weren't waiting for the dues ex machina, the magical new technology or unlikely miracle to save the day. A universe where the characters you got to explore and travel with weren't Gary or Mary Stus; they were real people with real motivations and faults, who weren't always the best, the smartest, the prettiest, or the cleverest. I envisioned a universe where things made sense and played by the rules, a universe with a lived in feel to it. Like any space opera, there are technologies that are fantastical and don't exist in reality, but where possible, I tried inject some real physics and when I used "space magic", I tried to do so in a consistent manner.

One of my primary goals was to avoid creating a derivative work. If you're looking for a rehashing of the same old story lines, you've come to the wrong place. This won't be the same old story you've heard before, you know, the one with the aging ship, the alcoholic XO, and the captain who isn't liked by the admiralty despite his uncanny competence. Oh, and we can't forget the unimaginably, faceless, cookie-cutter alien invaders. If you're looking for the eclectic crew on the prototype/unique ship that's just better, you aren't going to find it. If you're looking for the captain that somehow is brilliant, saving the say with unheard of strategies that often entail a simplistic broadside from point blank range, you'll be disappointed. Now, I'm not saying there aren't aspects that don't touch close to some of those tropes and familiar plot devices, but I'm promising you they will feel new and unique, and most importantly, they'll feel like they fit.

I welcome you to explore the Descendants of Terra universe with me. Follow the lives of Jonn, Kryxa, Vi, and Zaar. So far, every person asked has had a differing ranking and reasoning for which characters are their favorites and least favorites. And that isn't surprising, they each have differing personalities, motivations, backgrounds, experiences, and a differing place in the story. I've loved listening to people who've read or were reading the book arguing about the characters.

Oh, and yes, this is the first in a series, but don't worry, it doesn't end in a cliffhanger. It can easily stand on its own as a single story. Now, I'm not saying you won't be chomping at the bit to learn more and explore the universe more fully, just that I'm not going to leaving you with a terrible cliffhanger just to sell more books.
