Educated at Dover Grammar School, Kent, and then at the University Of Birmingham, where I studied microbiology and philosophy. After variously working as a shadow puppet theater manager and prospective jazz saxophonist, I taught myself computer programming, becoming a freelance consultant. My writing career began, aged nine and a half, when I won a national TV children's short story competition. Thereafter my writing became dormant, apart from a couple of Edinburgh Fringe comedy reviews, until it was revived in protest against a religious movement I once belonged to. We kept in touch for a brief while after college but then lost touch with each other. More than ten years later another ex-college friend was visiting and told me Alison had married a solicitor. This seemed an uncharacteristically respectable thing for Alison to do. I had known her as an extremely alternative-minded and unconventional person. Years later, when casting around for an idea for a novel, I remembered my friend's puzzling marriage choice and put it as the starting point for my second mystery novel, "For the Love of Alison", with the added puzzle that the left-wing Alison of my novel has married an extreme right-winger. My second novel was a finalist in the 2020 Indies Today award. Despite this, getting attention from literary agents has been difficult, My wife suggested I should "add some sex positions" to get people to sit up and take notice. So I took her literally at her word and wrote "Sixty Positions with Pleasure." 60, because I didn't want to be outdone by 50 Shades of Grey"! However, my genre remains mystery thriller, so the novel is a mix of mystery thriller, erotic and the added ingredient of political satire.(less)
