Educated at Dover Grammar School, Kent, and then at the University Of Birmingham, where I studied microbiology and philosophy. After variously working as a shadow puppet theater manager and prospective jazz saxophonist, I taught myself computer programming, becoming a freelance consultant. My writing career began, aged nine and a half, when I won a national TV children's short story competition. Thereafter my writing became dormant, apart from a couple of Edinburgh Fringe comedy reviews, until it was revived in protest against a religious movement I once belonged to. I remembered years ago hearing about a friend whom I ha…moreI needed a starting point for a second novel, a puzzle with which to kick the whole story off. I remembered years ago hearing about a friend whom I had lost touch with after college, that she had married a professional lawyer. Nothing very unusual about that, you might think, but then you didn't know Alison! A curiously respectable thing for an unconventional person like her to do. I thought, suppose the protagonist of my novel, who hasn't seen his college friend for thirty years, receives a phone call out of the blue, inviting him to visit her house. And suppose, the very same night, the lawyer husband gets murdered. Did the protagonist do it? Is he imagining things (his past obsession with Alison caused him to become mentally ill) or is he the victim of a setup? Even more puzzling, Alison has disappeared. Where is Alison now? The protagonist travels the country in a desperate search to find her, with the law and a criminal psychiatrist in hot pursuit. However, like all my mysteries, what you think is happening and what is actually happening are very different. The challenge, and fun, for the reader is to see through the smokescreen of misdirection and false clues.(less)
