Rebecca Taylor is the author of Ascendant, winner of the 2014 Colorado Book Award and a Library Journal National Self-e Select title; Midheaven; Descendant, The Exquisite and Immaculate Grace of Carmen Espinoza, and Romance Writers of America RITA Finalist, Affective Needs.

She lives in sunny Colorado with her husband, two teens, and two tragically spoiled dogs. When she’s not planted in front of her keyboard, she likes to take long flights to places she’s never been, read all sorts of books, drink tea (but only good English tea with milk, no sugar), loiter in bookstores, stare into the abyss, and worry that she should probably be writing instead.

This book is different from my others because it is strictly contemporary--my other titles have paranormal or metaphysical elements.

The idea for Affective Needs was born out of my career as a school psychologist and my background in psychology and sociology. I see kids every day who are incredibly bright and capable, but because they struggle with significant environmental and family problems, it is difficult for them to accomplish everything they could given a stable home life where their basic needs are met. “A faint is one breath away from nothing. Only it is far worse than actually being nothing because the only thing left of you is the memory of having once been a something.”

“I think the low emotional moments happen for every author. This is the time to find a sturdy mental ballast & realize self-doubt storms pass--you know, the same way hurricanes do.”
