The best advice for an aspiring writer is this: fire up your laptop and start writing, and don’t look back, and write every day, and push on until you have a completed manuscript. Only then can you feel strong enough to go further and edit and improve.(less)

This time they get involved after a spree killing in a day trading “shop.” Again this was a fascinating time, during the Dot Com boom, when ordinary folks would walk into a building, hire computers and software, and trade shares to their heart’s content. Nowadays of course anyone can doe this at home, online, but it’s still called “day trading.” I’m also working on a longer term project in an entirely different genre, a nonfiction history in the energy field.(less)

The Good Ancestor by Roman Krznaric

I'm as bedeviled by short-term horizons as most of us, so I turned to this with bated breath. With good reason: this book is a panoramic overview of a philosophy/mindset of far-seeking intergenerational morality. Philosopher Krznaric is a sparkling s ...more

Charlie Newton is a modern thriller writer of distinction, his books careening rides. Privateers is one of his best. It features a heart-of-gold Chicago hustler, allied with gutsy women, against Haiti evil while tracking down treasure clues in the cl ...more

A speedy, enjoyable read in a wonderful sci-fi genre, that of robots and AI. The milieu of research laboratories is utterly convincing, as is the technical setup of scanning/copying of minds (perhaps more could have been pursued about the nature of m ...more

African-American Texas Ranger Darren Matthews is a fascinating hero and the book's backdrop of the Aryan Brotherhood, in this Trumpian time, adds relevancy. I raced through the complex plot. Can recommend.

A one-sitting reading that I enjoyed. #7 for Seattle homicide detective Tracey Crosswhite and a complex set of mysteries and circumstances. Not quite as interesting a mystery as some and interesting characters lacking some spark. I read it in one sit ...more

An enjoyable read although for a thriller the amount of tension generated is a bit low. Interesting plot. Hopefully the series will continue.

Who doesn’t relish a “difficult” book and especially a Booker winner. Milkman contained gems to admire but little real enjoyment. Too claustrophobic, too distancing. I can see why it found admirers and don’t regret the read.

Brilliant! I sank into Eleanor and her life, so unfamiliar to me. Gail Honeyman manages the plot with great surety and the climax is both logical and a suprise.
