Hooked on a Phoenix is shapeshifting done right! As the first installment of the new Phoenix Brothers series, this fast-paced romance is a must-read. We follow Misty and Gabe as they rekindle an old friendship and new, heated emotions rise. The action surrounding Misty is perfectly plotted without taking away from the underlying passion. Readers will squirm in anticipation and swoon over Gabe. Gabe’s protective nature, his desire to find a real love and the keen attention he gives to Misty puts him in the running to be one heck of a book boyfriend who won’t be easy to forget.

Misty Carlisle is in the business of making bad decisions. Or rather she’s just incredibly unlucky. Immediately into the novel, the bank she works at gets robbed. Luckily, she has Gabe Fierro, her childhood crush, by her side as she meanders through a series of ill-fated events. Gabe is a shape-shifting hunk of man. When his buddy asks if Gabe would look after his younger sister, Misty, feelings start to resurface as Misty relearns Gabe’s unique quirks. But will she stay after she finds out he’s a shapeshifter? This is the first book in the A Tale of the Coven series and it absolutely makes a lasting impression. With magic, witches and intrigue, R. A. Salvatore has created a world unlike any other. We are immediately thrust into a vivid setting and it’s impossible not to fall in love with Aoleyn. There are some questions that aren’t resolved at the end of the book, but this does not interrupt the plot and Aoleyn’s journey. This is a very dark read and the brutality may deter some readers, but for those thrill seekers who aren’t afraid to confront evil, this book will surely impress.

We are first introduced to Aoleyn as a three-year-old child. We follow her as she lives among a tribe of barbarians, the Usgar. Some of the Usgar women are witches of the Coven who conjure magic from crystals found in the mountain. As the orphaned daughter of a witch, it’s not surprising when Aoleyn desires to become a witch herself. Becoming one has its own complications and, on top of that, the Usgar have seemingly violent ways and brutal traditions that Aoleyn is suddenly placed in the middle of. (TOR, Feb., 496 pp., $25.99)

That electric, fiery touch, the goo-goo eyes and endless romantic dates … who doesn’t want a piece of that? Match Made in Manhattan is an endearing compilation of dates. Some are hilarious and some are totally bizarre, but you never know what you’re going to find in New York, especially when your only means of meeting men is via the internet! Alison joins an online dating site and we follow her through some good — and terribly awkward — romantic encounters. There is a plateau in this book, and although it’s an enjoyable, fast-paced read, the choppiness and lack of climax may deter readers who are looking for an “oh, my heart!” romance.

Sculpted from her own personal experience with online dating, Amanda Stauffer has embodied what dating is like in the digital age: unexpected, fast-paced and a journey of self-discovery.
