Can't believe i've never read it. I'll try hunt out a good-looking copy. A friend of mine made a short film parody of it. I must dig out the link...

Marc Horne Solaris is so good that it is a tragedy that the copy I own has the big George Clooney snog cover. An image that they liked so much THEY PUT IT ON THE SPINE TOO.

Much preferred the dusty old library copy I first read.
