I've never not written.

Some of my earliest memories involve telling tales: I began writing them down when I was four... or maybe when I was five, when I stopped to just mashing the buttons down to make a mess. They weren't very good stories, of course - I'm not entirely sure if even the ones I write as an adult are - but still, I just had to get them out there.

Even now, "have to get them out" is my primary motivation to write: I write largely to purge the thoughts out of my mind, to put them down in a solid form where they will stop bothering me so much. It's an eternal and ultimately futile struggle, because for each one I so conjure into the world, two or three more will take its place - sometimes directly spawned by that previous one. La

I don't like silence.

Whenever possible, I try to listen to similar stuff as the story I'm writing at the time, to get the right kind of inspiration and to keep me in the correct sort of mood. The Straggler's Mask, for instance, has a lot of Blind Guardian running behind the scenes. Return To The Tribe, by Edguy, would be about as close to a theme song as possible for Peal if only he weren't so meek.

Other times it doesn't work out that well. Lately I've had my mind for a lot of synthwave (and a bunch of related things that I can't name), and this brings very little of value or mood in relation to a steampunk pirate story I've been writing. At best, it just keeps me in a good creative mood in general, rather than giving me any particular ideas.

On the other hand, I've got some Bal-Sagoth ready for something a little darker for NaNoWriMo. We'll see if that works out better.(less)

At the time of this writing, I've recently skipped about ten chapters, give or take.

More often than not, for me it's the opposite feeling: I run out of story to write but still feel like writing, and then I've got a few days when I have no idea what to do with the sudden free time I've gotten.(less)

All Flesh Is Crutch - Notes On Psychic Powers

I rewatched Akira today for the umpteenth time, and this time around it helped give me a lot of thoughts to go for in regards of psychic abilities and people that wield them. Enough for a story, perhaps. I'll jot down some of my thoughts here.

In order to survive and propagate, all life needs to work with the world around it - to perceive and observe it, to touch and interact with it, and to have f Read more of this blog post »

I thought it before, and I think it now - the design of the Menos Grande is pretty great. It really feels like a ghost-monster in every other way besides just its size. Worth at least a quarter-star all on its own.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
"I have read and enjoyed all the Harry Potter books. In a way, I consider them my friends. The Night Circus is no Harry Potter, despite the marketing dreams of Doubleday management.

It is a fantastical battle/love story, set at the turn of the 20th ce" Read more of this review »

“Are you a human yourself?”

No.

“Are you one of the following: leper, witch or cultist, undead, werewolf, mutant, bureaucrat, bard?”
Juho Pohjalainen, The Straggler's Mask

“For I have always been a seeker, a dreamer, and a ponderer on seeking and dreaming...”
H.P. Lovecraft, Night Ocean et autres nouvelles

“I think of myself as a bad writer with big ideas, but I'd rather be that than a big writer with bad ideas.”
Michael Moorcock, Elric: The Stealer of Souls

“Even the most outspoken of the critics must admit that long before we had print and film media to "spread the word," mankind was engaged in all forms of cruel and despicable behavior. To attribute war, killing, and violence to film, TV, and role-play games is to fly in the face of thousands of years of recorded history.”
Gary Gygax, Role-Playing Mastery

“May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you're wonderful, and don't forget to make some art -- write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself.”
Neil Gaiman

“I have known many gods. He who denies them is as blind as he who trusts them too deeply. I seek not beyond death. It may be the blackness averred by the Nemedian skeptics, or Crom's realm of ice and cloud, or the snowy plains and vaulted halls of the Nordheimer's Valhalla. I know not, nor do I care. Let me live deep while I live; let me know the rich juices of red meat and stinging wine on my palate, the hot embrace of white arms, the mad exultation of battle when the blue blades flame and crimson, and I am content. Let teachers and philosophers brood over questions of reality and illusion. I know this: if life is illusion, then I am no less an illusion, and being thus, the illusion is real to me. I live, I burn with life, I love, I slay, and am content.”
Robert E. Howard and L. Sprague De Camp, Queen of the Black Coast
