From a young age, Ben Cass was in love with the premises of fantasy novels and comic books: amazing creatures, fantastic heroes, and magical powers that existed right beneath our noses. He created detailed storylines to act out with his toys, often updating the stories until he was satisfied with the plots.

His love of writing began in his senior year of high school, when he had to write short stories for his English class. He wrote the first one in ten minutes, all because it was due the next class period and he’d completely forgotten about it. That story was greeted with laughter and applause by his classmates and teacher. His subsequent assignments garnered even more positive responses, and Ben began to seriously consider writing as a hob

I have a full-time career, and write in my spare time. I once had a stretch of literal YEARS with writer's block. Sooner or later, my brain will re-engage with the writing.

So, if anything, I guess my advice would be to just relax. You can't force your brain to do anything it doesn't want to.(less)

It took me over a decade to reach that level of confidence, but once I finally did, I found a group of people who meshed well with me and who loved my story as much as I did. Their suggestions were made with the best intentions, and really helped hone my story.

You have to make sure the partners' style of critiquing fits your needs. If you have a thin skin, don't get somebody who's brutally honest.

Having said that, you also need to be able to read the critique with an open mind. You don't have to agree with them--I didn't always agree--but have the courtesy and common sense to stop and think about their suggestions. Don't just assume that your writing is amazing and fantastic, because it really might not be. I look back at my first draft of my debut book and cringe at how awful it was.(less)
