I am a dreamer and, sometimes, I make a record of those dreams and call them books...

My work ranges across forms, from short novels to games, picture books and a podcast called Diary of a Space Archivist. Oh, and a blog.

Yep.

Dreams, all of them.

Here’s the thing. I don’t believe in inspiration. Now I know people talk about it all the time. But I honestly think this is one of those writer myths that we tell ourselves (and very often believe), to both our own and the aspiring writer’s detriment.

Here’s what I think is really happening.

You’ve got an idea. A wonderful idea. Or, at least, something that feels kind of wonderful to you. But you keep putting it off. The idea might even fade away - you’ve got a job to do, bills to pay etc.

And then, one day, that old idea - or perhaps even a new one - bursts out onto the page. And we call that moment inspiration.

I think that, really, that moment was a refusal to be ignored any more. I think we mistake bursting out of our self-imposed repression of writing, for inspiration.

Instead - we shouldn’t deny ourselves or put our ideas off in the first place. We should chip away. If we do, we’ll feel better and we’ll write more.

That’s what I think anyway...(less)

'Intergalactic Fly-Fishing' has been on the boil, so-to-speak, for a long time... But the heart of it came from my experiences as a twenty-something. I didn't go through everything that Lucy does - but my friends were (and are) incredibly important to me.

It's a sort of coming of age story, but coming of age narratives for women, usually have the protagonist finding themselves in the arms of a significant other - usually a man. I didn't want to do that. I wanted to write a book about finding yourself in friendships.

So - yeah... (less)
