[THE] Fridge Organization Tips For a Healthy Reset
It’s officially 2021…and it’s safe to say we’re all ready to press the reset button. If making healthier choices is on your to-do list, just remember that starting small is the key to long-term success. This is what the Low-Bar Lifestyle is all about: Baby steps over a low, low bar will keep you motivated.
The best way to start is by organizing your fridge and reworking the system. When healthy items are visible, easy to access, and easy to prepare, you’ll be a lot less likely to cave, which for me means ordering delivery and calling it a day.

Tip #1: Stock Up on Healthy Staples
If you want to start eating healthier, you obviously need to stock your fridge with healthy food. It helps to create a list of core staples to have on hand at all times. This takes the guesswork out of grocery shopping, and you’ll feel more prepared during meal and snack time.
My core staples include a variety of precut fruits and veggies, cheese slices, single-serving yogurts, eggs, and lots of turkey. It’s one of the leanest meats, and is rich in vitamins and minerals. It’s also easy to prepare, and super versatile—literally, so many recipes!
My favorite brand for turkey is Honeysuckle White (or its sister brand, Shady Brook Farms). It’s free of growth hormones and antibiotics, and raised by independent family farmers…such a high-quality product!

Tip #2: Start Fresh
When it comes to actually organizing your fridge, don’t skip the editing process. Do you want to create a functional system that works for your space and promotes a healthier lifestyle? Then trust me! Even if you don’t feel like it, start by removing every single item from your fridge until it’s completely empty. I suggest keeping a trash bag nearby and tossing anything expired as you go. And since your fridge shelves are probably due for a deep clean, here’s your chance to actually get in there and wipe off that weird sticky layer!

Tip #3: Group into Broad Categories
When grouping your items, think in broader categories, such as “veggies” and “condiments” vs. “cucumbers” and “ketchup”. This will ensure that all incoming items have a home, which is crucial for maintaining an organized system. It only makes sense to subcategorize if you regularly buy bulk amounts of a specific item.

Tip #4: Create Zones
Every category should live in a designated zone (location) and preferably, within a contained and visible home (clear product). This allows everything to be accessible, accounted for, and aesthetically pleasing…while also maximizing shelf space.

Tip #5: Add a Label
Labeling isn’t just the finishing touch, it’s actually the secret sauce of the system. Labels are really just straightforward directions for where items go. They concretely identify the contents that live in each container. It not only helps *you* maintain the system, but it holds your kids, your partner, and anyone else using the space, too.
*Reminder: Think broad, not specific when labeling your categories. It should be a simple road map that’s flexible enough for the occasional outlier.

To help get you organized in the new year, we’re partnering with Honeysuckle White/Shady Brook Farms to give away a virtual “A LOT OF HELP” session (click here for details), $2,500 gift certificate from The Container Store, + free turkey product! Click here to enter!
Happy Reset!

[THE] Tips For Storing Holiday Decor
In a matter of a few short weeks, I’ll be forced by my husband (and the HOA) to take down my holiday decor, which quite simply feels as if I’m Moira Rose handing my wigs over to the feds…

But alas, the show must go on! Even though I can’t display my holiday decor 365 days a year, at least I can organize and store it in a way that makes it easier to unpack next year.

Let’s start with the basics…

Take photos: Before you start packing up, snap some photos of the decorated rooms to use as a reference for next year. It will simplify the unpacking process when you can visually see what you have and where it needs to go.
Edit as you go: Fight the urge to shove everything back into storage bins without editing first. It’s a waste of space and energy to pack and then unpack items that shouldn’t be there in the first place. Keep a few garbage bags nearby to toss or donate the items that have reached their expiration date.
Store in good condition: If something is broken, fix it or toss it. If something is dirty, clean it. It takes more effort to resurrect an item after its been in storage so just take care of it now so life is easier later *insert shrug emoji*
Label E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G: Just because you access these items once a year doesn’t mean you should skip labeling. In fact, it’s even more of a reason to label because you’re even more likely to forget. (P.S. If you want labels in THE signature font, place your custom order here!)
[the] ORNAMENTS:

Let’s start with the most fragile, shall we? Store ornaments in stackable bins with compartments for protection. We suggest categorizing based on color, design, or the tree they belong to. For extra security, wrap each ornament in individual foam packing envelopes.
[ the ] LIGHTS:
A string of tangled lights is an experience I prefer to avoid. Wrap them around a durable reel to keep them secure and protected before placing in storage.
[ the ] WREATHS:

A crushed wreath? No, thanks. Use a storage container made specifically for wreaths. They are durable, stackable, and also work perfectly for garland.
[ the ] TREE:

If you opt for artificial and have the vertical space, use a protective tree bag and store it all in one piece, lights included. Another option is wrapping and and labeling each part, then storing it in a bin.
[ the ] GIFT SUPPLIES:

If you have a spare closet, transform it into a gifting station for *every* gifting need, categorized by occasion. This allows you to grab what you need and only what you need at any given time.

Use clear stackable bins with cup inserts to contain items like ribbon, bows, tissue, gift tags, etc. Wrapping paper can either be stored laying flat in under-the-bed boxes , held in acrylic risers flipped upside down, or stored upright up using floor bins.

In small spaces, utilize an Elfa over-the-door rack and swap the items by season. It should include a utility board for scissors and tape, baskets for ribbon, gift tags, and cards, and a holder for wrapping paper.
[ the ] EVERYTHING ELSE:

Items like stockings, pillows, tablecloths, and tree skirts can either be stored in stackable plastic bins or vacuum-sealed bags. Categorize (and label) by room or item. If you tend to keep to a routine, labeling by room will help in the unpacking process.

To protect glass or ceramic accents or tableware, store in stackable china storage cases, or wrap each item tightly in foam packing sheets before placing them in a labeled bin.
Hope y’all had a happy and safe holiday season!

Get [THE] Look: Bathroom Open Shelving

*Use the code JOANNA at checkout to receive 25% off your entire Boll and Branch order! It’s the only 25% discount they are offering this month, so now is the time to stock up, especially for holiday gifting!
Let’s just cut to the chase here….
You know how much Joanna and I love Boll and Branch. We’d shout it from the rooftops if we could, but considering we hate being outdoors and have a fear of heights, we’re taking to the internet instead.
The reason? Boll and Branch carries the softest and coziest linens—from bed sheets and pillows to bath towels and robes. They are also beautiful, and give major “Am-I-at-home-or-am-at-a-fancy-resort-hotel-and-spa?” vibes. What more could you ask for?

This makes them a perfect addition to open shelving. Which is exactly what I did in my bathroom recently with my favorite Plush Bath Sheet Sets! I’ve always preferred white towels but decided to switch things up by bringing in a few other color options on the cool spectrum to match the overall aesthetic of the space.

My kids have basically taken over our bathroom on a nightly basis—so now with the different colors, everyone has their own designated set that can be easily identified.

Whether you have open shelving or a small closet, Boll and Branch linens provide the perfect blend of form and function. It’s also such a simple look to master!

Organizing Gets Digital with THE x Flavor Maker App

We consider ourselves organizing experts, but cooking experts? Not quite. However, we’ve found that the two often go hand in hand!
Did you know there is actually a French culinary concept of “mise en place” or having “everything in its place”? Basically….when you know what you have on-hand and where it is, you’re more likely to use it and use it properly. Hmmmm….sounds familiar!
That’s why this holiday season, we’re partnering with the Flavor App powered by McCormick to showcase how merging the gap between traditional and digital organization can help streamline an entire kitchen routine.
One of our favorite things about this app is its ability to digitally organize your pantry. All you do is scan in your spices and ingredients, and voila! Your pantry is online and easy to access from anywhere.

Along with learning about the app and using it to help get ourselves holiday-ready, we partnered with McCormick to offer you our best tips on spice-specific organizing. Check them out!
Tip #1: Clean out your spice cabinet once, maybe twice a year. Daylight Savings Time is a perfect reminder.
Tip #2: Know how fresh your spices are. McCormick products include a “best by” date on the packaging. You can also give it a quick sniff test to make sure the spice is still aromatic.
Tip #3: Display your spices on a tiered rack (like ours here!), so you can see labels clearly. Keep your favorites front-and-center and rotate in others occasionally to remind yourself what you have
Tip #4: Alphabetize the rest of your spices so that you can find them when prepping for new recipes.
Tip #5: Keep baking spices, extracts, and food color in a separate bin or area of the pantry, so they’ll be easy to find when you need them.
Tip #6: Store spices away from extreme heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. They should not be kept above the stove, and caps should be securely tightened to keep them fresh!

And to top it all off, the McCormick Kitchens even helped us design our very own recipe: The Home Edit’s Gingerbread Brownies with Eggnog Frosting. It includes all our favorite things – and it’s easy to make based off a boxed brownie mix! Check it out, along with other The Home Edit exclusive content and promo code, on the Flavor Maker App by McCormick, available for free on iOS & Android.

Home For THE Holidays Decor
*Sponsored by Crate & Barrel and ShopStyle
“Oh, there’s no place like home for the holidays” takes on a whole new meaning this year… BECAUSE IT’S THE ONLY PLACE.
After staring at the same four walls for months on end, I was *more* than ready to bring out the holiday decor. It was hard enough having to wait until November 1st. Because if it were up to me, our tree would have been up in April.
This year, the majority of my decor is from Crate and Barrel. They are my go-to for items that perfectly match the aesthetic of my home while still being festive. This makes it easy to build the case that it’s also winter decor so I can leave it up longer. It’s called thinking ahead.

Let’s start from the outside and make our way in, shall we? On the porch, I wanted to keep it traditional with this Frosted White Berry Wreath. It can work for any season and looks real even though it’s artificial, which is always a plus. Obviously, the ROYGBIV doormat was staying.
To match the white and black exterior of my home, I added these LED Birch Trees and Ora Black Wire Lanterns to our porches and walkways. They look beautiful and chic during the day, and also when lit at night.

Recently, I’ve been retreating to the porch because it’s the one place my kids never think to look. Here I am wrapped in a cozy throw (also from Crate and Barrel), caffeine coursing through my veins, admiring my decor, whilst radiating major David Rose energy.

Time to head inside! Since we’re typically in California visiting family over the holidays, we’ve always had an artificial tree instead of a real one. This might be an unpopular opinion, but artificial trees are better anyway. Who wants to sweep up needles every day? Not to mention the fact that getting the thing into your house and disposing of it is a real schlep.

I get it. There is nothing like the smell of a live Christmas tree…but set this ILLUME ® Balsam and Cedar Reed Diffuser and Birch and Juniper Potpourri nearby and you’ll never know the difference.

One of my favorite finds of the season was this Black Cane Tree Collar. It not only matches the aesthetic of my home, but it also conceals the ugliness of a tree stand.
When it comes to actual tree decor, white lights are the only option. I bring fun and color in with the ornaments. This year, I went with a Schitt’s Creek theme because it’s 2020 and there are no rules anymore.

To bring coziness to every nook of my home, I hung a Pre-Lit Hemlock Pine Wreath near the staircases and lined them with LED ceramic trees. My kids are fully aware that these are not toys, and Santa and the Elf on the Shelf are watching them closely. All is merry and bright on that front so far, but I’ll keep you updated.
Have a happy and safe holiday season, y’all!
