MARIA J. ESTRADA is an English college professor of Composition, Literature, and her favorite, Creative Writing. She grew up in the desert outside of Yuma, Arizona in the real Barrio de Los Locos, a barrio comprised of new Mexican immigrants and first-generation Chicanos. Drawing from this setting and experiences, she writes like a loca every minute she can—all while magically balancing her work and family obligations. She lives in Chicago’s south side with her wonderfully supportive husband, two remarkable children, and a magical menagerie of animals. You can learn more about her other books and writing happenings at barrioblues.com and barriobluespress.com.

No Overeating and Early Resolutions

PicturePhoto by Nicole Michalou from Pexels Many of you know I suffer from depression. I think a lot of writers suffer from some mental malaise, though you don't have to be suffering to be a great writer. You don't have to be an overindulgent bar fly. These are just romantic tropes you see in movies. Overly romanticized at that.

Well, I have resolved not to stuff my feelings down with food. It gets me no Read more of this blog post »

Best damn book I have ever produced! I had a great time editing the book with Daniel Brooks who is an amazing collaborator.

To date, this is one of the prettiest books I have edited and designed, and it will be a pleasure to take Misael on the road!

“I look at her legs, bent out in front of her like a fleshy diamond, the soles of her feet braced against one another. I follow them over her calves, through the dipped valley behind her knees, all the way up the tight fabric of her shorts, and then up over her belly and up to the heaviness of her breasts. There, she got it threaded. (From Jukebox Loser: An Owner's Manual for Idiot Desires)”

Frank Herbert
“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
Frank Herbert, Dune

Friedrich Nietzsche
“I have done that', says my memory. I cannot have done that—says my pride and remains unshakeable. Finally—memory yields.”
Friedrich Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil

Adrian J. Walker
“Before the first step, before the first muscle twitches, before the first neuron fires, there comes a choice: stand still or move. You choose the right option. Then you repeat that choice one hundred thousand times. You don’t run thirty miles, you run a single step many times over. That’s all running is; that’s all anything is. If there’s somewhere you need to be, somewhere you need to get to, or if you need to change or move away from where or what you are, then that’s all it takes. A hundred thousand simple decisions, each one made correctly. You don’t have to think about the distance or the destination or about how far you’ve come or how far you have to go. You just have to think about what’s in front of you and how you’re going to move it behind you.”
Adrian J. Walker, The End of the World Running Club
