Jennieke Cohen (JEN-ih-kah CO-en) is used to people mispronouncing her name and tries to spare her fictional characters the same problem. Jennieke writes historical fiction for young adults inspired by real people and events because life is often stranger than fiction. She studied English history at Cambridge University and has a master’s degree in professional writing from the University of Southern California. Jennieke loves exploring new locales but always returns home to Northern California where the summers are hot, the winters are mild, and life is casual.

Hi Julie! I am writing more books! Currently I'm working on more historical YA novels, though I can't say too much more than that ATM ;)

EDIT (August 2020): I can now say that my next book is titled MY FINE FELLOW and it's a gender-swapped Pygmalion retelling set in an alternate 19th century London where two girls who are culinary experts teach a young man to be gentleman chef for the upper crust of society. You can add it here on Goodreads, and it will be out January of 2022!(less)

As for Austen's men, my votes go to Henry Tilney and Captain Wentworth. My main character Vicky likes to think she's like Elizabeth Bennet, but really, all of Austen's heroines inspired me in some way, so I hope Vicky will read as a unique character in an Austen-esque story! My male protagonist Tom is a bit of a mishmash of Mr. Darcy, Captain Wentworth, and Mr. Knightley (though he's younger and more tortured than any of them).(less)

“Just because sensational events happen in novels, that doesn't mean they cannot happen.”
Jennieke Cohen, Dangerous Alliance: An Austentacious Romance

“She hoped he laughed often, because it would be a shame to deprive the world of that sound.”
Jennieke Cohen, Dangerous Alliance: An Austentacious Romance

He has already mastered (or become quite proficient at) a number of skills and techniques such as braises, fricassees, roasting, searing, and sautéing. He was already well versed in pie and pastry making, so teaching him laminated pastry and more difficult cakes and confectionary has proceeded much faster than I anticipated. (I suspect Helena feels the same, though she always pretends to be nonplussed at his progress.) His knowledge and interest in the dishes of other cultures also continues to surprise me. His empanadas, it seems, were only the tip of the bavarois. He makes a delightful curry after the East Indian style, and his fried plantains (both the sweet maduros and the crispy double-fried green ones) have become my new favorite snack before our evening meal. You would love them, Nanay, I am certain.
Nanay, I've also taught him most of the rice dishes in my repertoire (as Helena continues to find rice to be rather lowly---though she eats risotto and paella readily enough when they're on the table), and although he was surprised when I first showed him plain, unadulterated rice as you make it, he soon gobbled it up and has been experimenting with more Eastern-inspired rice dishes and desserts and puddings ever since.
