And so I would have to say the best thing about being a writer is getting to create something new to share with the world. Plus, as a writer of children's books I have the opportunity to illustrate what I write, which brings another thing I love into the mix.

I think my second favorite thing about being a writer is knowing that what I write has the ability to impact the people who encounter it. Whether it's helping a child to know how much they are loved by their caregiver, or assuring someone struggling with depression that they are not alone, words can be powerful and life-changing. Yes, it's definitely good to do your research, find holes in the market, brainstorm ideas... but I also think it can be really easy to get stuck in that stage and never actually begin. So just start writing! Not every idea is going to be golden, not every project will necessarily go somewhere, but once you get started you'll start to get a better sense of your voice as a writer and what kinds of topics interest you. With practice you'll naturally improve and can hone in on a more specific path from there. (less)
