Ryan Southwick decided to dabble at writing late in life, and quickly became obsessed with the craft. He currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and two children.

His technical skills as a software developer, healthcare experience, and lifelong fascination for science fiction became the ingredients for his first series, The Z-Tech Chronicles, which combines these elements into a fantastic contemporary tale of super-science, fantasy, and adventure, based in his Bay Area stomping grounds.

If the part I'm stuck on doesn't directly apply, I'll delete it and start over (I'm on my 3rd book now and have become much less afraid to delete paragraphs or entire chapters if they don't keep things moving).

Second, if I'm stuck, it usually means things are dragging, and my reader will probably feel it, too. That's when it's time to abbreviate what I'm trying to say or "throw in another dead body", as they say. I'll add an unexpected event or phrase and play it out with the characters. Most times it turns into something positive that easily ties back into the plot.(less)

Enigma - Writing Wonders May 2023

May was my first month participating in ,Writing Wonders, created by Alina Leonova, Amelia Kayne, and Branwen O'Shea over on Mastodon. It's a fun writing community exercise where authors answer a question a day about their works in progress. My server has a 500-character post limit. I tried to stay within that, so each answer is short.

The work-in-progress I focused on is ,Enigma (Lost Colonies Boo

What an amazing fantasy tale! At its heart, Legends & Lattes is a “retired adventurer” trope in a fantasy setting with a twist of steam punk, yet those descriptions alone don’t do the story justice. The protagonist, Viv, is endearing, as are her part ...more
