Deborah Small grew up on a hobby farm where her passion for books, and all things furred and feathered, was indulged. When she wasn't riding one of her horses, or tending her critter menagerie, she was reading. Anything, and everything. Even in math class (much to her many teachers' exasperation). Deborah's love of books and reading sparked her childhood ambition to become a novelist: she wanted to bring joy—and happy tears—to readers, as her favorite authors did her.

School breaks were spent on the cattle ranch her grandparents carved from British Columbia's Cariboo-Chilcotin wilderness, rugged experience that imbued her with a deep respect for her ranching family, and their predecessors, especially her female forebears. After graduation,
