For me, the best thing about being a writer is the ability to positively impact readers' lives by weaving inspirational messages into a fun story.

For example, I hope TUNING IN encourages readers to think about what misbeliefs they may hold about themselves. These misbeliefs, like "I'm not good at math" or "love's not worth the cost" hold us back from our full potential. I also hope TUNING IN encourages readers to question mainstream notions of reality and the role of consciousness.(less)

Inspiration for Spiraling Suns of Consciousness

My inspiration for the spiraling orbs Jon sees in the field of consciousness came from John Edmark's "Blooms" -- 3D sculptures that animate when spun under the correct shutter speed. In Edmark's words, "The bloom’s animation effect is achieved by progressive rotations of the golden ratio, phi (ϕ), the same ratio that nature employs to generate the spiral patterns we see in pinecones and sunflowers. “She rolled onto her side, crumpling more MRI print outs, and stared at the picture on her bedside table. It was a photo of Jady at five years old. She was sleeping peacefully, hair matted on her forehead and clutching her pink blanket, the tag up to her nose. Ella remembered those precious minutes, before she’d sneak out for the early train, when she’d spoon her warm little girl, smell her hair and, if she closed her eyes, feel as if they were one, safe from the world. It had been on a morning like that when she’d been convinced that she stopped Jady’s hiccups by sending comforting thoughts.”
Richard H. Roberts, Tuning In

“Jon reeled, as Lex’s dark psyche began infecting him like an emotional contagion. As usual, the physical symptoms came first: his heart rate ramped up and caffeine jitters buzzed down to his fingertips. He knew how this dinner would go, and after traveling for twenty-six hours, he simply didn’t have it in him. Thankfully, he’d had a lifetime of practice bowing out of social situations.”

“The mind is not a book, to be opened at will and examined at leisure. Thoughts are not etched on the inside of skulls, to be perused by an invader. The mind is a complex and many-layered thing, Potter… or at least, most minds are…”

“If you're really listening, if you're awake to the poignant beauty of the world, your heart breaks regularly. In fact, your heart is made to break; its purpose is to burst open again and again so that it can hold evermore wonders.”
Andrew Harvey
