B.K. Bass is the author of over a dozen works of science fiction, fantasy, and horror inspired by the pulp fiction magazines of the early 20th century and classic speculative fiction. He is also a freelance editor with experience both as a publisher and editor-in-chief of a literary journal. When B.K. isn’t dreaming up new worlds to explore, he spends his time as a lifelong student of history, bookworm, and film buff.

If I can't think of what to write next, I'll work on editing something. I might even edit an earlier chapter in the same piece, and that will inspire me to write what comes next. Also, there is a lot more to being an author than writing these days, so use your time productively. If your time at the keyboard isn't getting writing done, use the time for research, networking, marketing, and other related tasks. Don't just blow off work because of writer's block, there's plenty of other things to get done. The words will come, just don't give up.(less)

Even in fiction, there is an undercurrent of reality. Look at the works of Tolkien, and although there are elves and dwarfs and goblins; there is the undercurrent of what he lived in the trenches of World War One. Also, creating something from nothing is always something to be proud of. This is not exclusive to writing, by any means. Painting, sculpting, wood carving, etc, these forms of creation are all rewarding for the process alone.(less)

The History of Speculative Fiction

I’m excited to share that I have a new article appearing on Campfire Learn: “The History of Speculative Fiction and How to Write It“.

Image (C) Campfire Technology, LLC, 2023

From the article’s introduction:

A multiverse of possibilities may spring to mind when considering the term speculative fiction, from dragons soaring over verdant meadows to massive starships exploring the cosmos.

What Once Was Home by B.K. Bass
"This is a surprising laid back alien invasion story, which was a pleasant surprise. Bass has a nice writing style that worked quite well. I started this with trepidation, but settled in pretty quickly. Recommended.

What Once Was Home by B.K. Bass
"Although this is post-apocalyptic, there's an overall heartwarming vibe woven in with the heart-racing moments. I really loved the opening, where we meet Jace as an old man, recalling the day things changed and how they changed. Bass is an excellent " Read more of this review »
