Mini Reviews #6: Poetry
*I am reviewing this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own. *
Title: BoneAuthor: Yrsa Daley-WardPublisher: PenguinSource: NetGalleyRating: 3/5 stars
Book Review:
I had heard so many good things about this book and as I have been getting into poetry I wanted to give this ago. I did like bone but I feel like it could have been better and I didn't connect with personally.
This collection combined poetry and prose linking to Yrsa's experiences. It is tender and cuts to the bone. There were definitely elements and pieces that I did enjoy did there were others that I didn't really connect with and I think that is what makes or breaks poetry collections for me. I would still love to read more of Daley-Ward's work and know that other people are going to really love this while I only enjoyed some of it.
The Verdict:
bone is interesting and important that everyone should read as they might connect with this more than I did.
Title: Wild EmbersAuthor: Nikita GillPublisher: Trapeze Source: NetGalleyRating: 4/5 stars
Book Review:
Wild Embers was a book that if I am honest I attracted by the cover let's face it, it's beautiful. But I didn't expect the inside to be as beautiful. Wild Embers was a beautiful poetry read that is such an important read for today.
Nikita Gill links to other poetry at the time often speaking about beauty, relationships but these often have an out of world feel that translates so wonderfully on the page. Gill is such a great writer and I think that I did connect to this on a deeper level than say bone which I just mentioned. I feel like this is a book that I connected to on an emotional level and I will come back to in years to come. It is a must read.
The Verdict:
Wild Embers is an important poetry book in the vain of Milk and Honey and should be read by everyone.
Title: Pardon My HeartAuthor: Marcus JacksonPublisher: Northwestern PressSource: NetGalleyRating: 3/5 stars
Book Review:
Pardon, My Heart was a read that I heard nothing about but I saw it on NetGalley and decided that I would give it a go. It is a story that details African American life and is therefore really important poetry collection.
I have to admit that I didn't get what I should of from this book. I feel like I read it too quickly and wish that I had taken it in more as I feel like this would have been so important. I think that it was so well written but I definitely want to reread it so I can get more from it on a reread.
The Verdict:
Pardon My Heart is an important read and is a great poetry read.
Title: She Must Be Mad
Author: Charly CoxPublisher: HQ StoriesSource: NetGalleyRating: 4/5 stars
Book Review:
She Must Be Mad has been getting more buzz from people including one of my favourite YA authors, Holly Bourne. I was therefore excited to read it especially as she has been compared to Carol Ann Duffy who I have enjoyed in the past. She Must Be Mad is a great read for anyone and everyone.
I really enjoy that Charly Cox dealt with her own mental health in the book. This was something that I haven't really read in poetry and prose like this before. I again think that Cox is a good writer and conveys her emotions really well. I also connected to her story and poetry a lot, especially in her social media. The way that she also dealt with mental health and overcoming this was great. I read must of this in one sitting before YALC and I now am anxious to get my own copy so I can reread it and get more people to love it as much as I do.
The Verdict:
She Must be Mad mixes poetry and prose for a wonderful book that is so important in the age of social media.
Have you read any of these poetry collections? Do you want to read them?

Blog Tour: Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow: Seeing Things From A Different Perspective
So this is a blog tour with a difference. Walker Books asked bloggers on this tour for the release of Siobhan Curham's Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow if they could see something for a different perspective so are posting a different bloggers post on theirs. These themes are seen in the book which is available in book shops now.
I get the amazing opportunity to host Shelley from Tales Before Bedtime on my blog today. Shelley's posts details her struggles with Anxiety and Depression allows people to truly know what it is like to experience these and allows you to step into her shoes. As someone who battles with anxiety myself, I can emphasise with Shelley's position which is a very honest and wonderfully written piece.
So, now over to Shelley...
I’ve always had a rather vivid imagination. Always been a worry-wart and an over-thinker One of my earliest memories is sitting on the sofa watching TV. It would have been perhaps a Sunday afternoon rerun of a Bond film or a Saturday night family programme such as 3,2,1 or The Generation Game. I don’t remember the in’s and out’s but I remember being snuggled up next to dad. Cosy, warm and safe and listening to his heartbeat, strong and loud to my little ears and I remember worrying that one day it might stop. Yes I am sensitive and I worry about just about anything and everything. This isn’t a reaction to any early trauma. I had a very happy, loving family life growing up. Perhaps school could have been better but it’s not about the why, sometimes these worries and anxieties are just part of who we are.
I remember once someone who had been rather unkind telling me ‘I was too sensitive’, as though it was weakness, a fault that could somehow turn the blame of their unpleasantness onto me. Of course today we live in a world where we need to be seen to be coping with whatever life throws at us. Family - tick. Career - tick. Healthy Lifestyle - tick. Saving the World - tick. And all with grace, style and a sense of humour where we’re able to ‘not take ourselves too seriously’. We are quite often judged by our visual success and our ability to give ourselves (or be given) a label that we believe gives us stature, that will make people think we’ve got this and anything else that comes our way. At times I wonder if we are all too busy trying to carve out that success that we forget the casualties we leave along the way.
When I was pregnant with my son a friend told me that I’d never love anything as much as my child. She was right. Still nothing could have prepared me for the feelings I had and I was completely overwhelmed. For someone who was a worrier, there were now a million new things to worry about. I was confused. On one hand I was incredibly happy and on the other constantly filled with an overwhelming sense of fear and anxiety. Before long I spiralled into depression and anxiety. It was a time of light and dark. But then again you have to endure the rain to appreciate the sunshine. It took a long time but I eventually found my way out of it with a lot of help and support. I had a lovely counsellor and I was a willing patient. It’s incredibly freeing to be able to actually say out loud the thoughts that had been slowly driving you mad. However, It wasn't easy. It’s awful pulling apart your thoughts and admitting to the darkness in there. I remember describing them as like a film constantly showing all the terrible things that could/would happen to those around me. It was always that sense of loss. I was always terrified of losing those close to me.
Now one of the hardest things about depression and anxiety is that sense of hate. For a while I really didn’t like myself. That’s the toughest thing to overcome. I felt like I was failing at everything. Depression and anxiety began with my own personal worries but it magnified and became about things I just couldn’t reach. I remember telling my counsellor that I struggled to cope with the notion of bringing my child up in a world that seemed so full of hate and anger.
‘You can’t stop all the terrible things that are happening in the world all on your own but you can make a difference in the world around YOU.’ He wasn’t telling me that I couldn’t make a difference or that I shouldn’t care about the bigger picture, he was simply reminding me that I didn’t have to feel the weight of of it all on my shoulders. He reminded me that I can make a difference simply by being mindful of my choices and being thoughtful towards others. Our actions may not always have a massive impact on the world but each and every one sends out a small vibration, a ripple if you like, that all add up to something bigger. Imagine if those vibrations were filled with love, empathy and hope?
Quite recently I was chatting to a friend about some incidents I have faced recently where people who I have known and trusted seemed to act in a thoughtless, disloyal way or turned against me. She advised that sometimes people just don’t understand the effect their words or actions have on you. She advised walking away from the moment instead of responding with anger. I think that’s great advice. I believe that we need to show compassion, have empathy towards others and be able to put ourselves in their shoes. It’s not always easy and it doesn’t mean we have to agree with their actions or beliefs but we can try to understand and not add another dose of hate to the mix. It's not easy though especially for those who you feel have let you down.
Over the years I have come to terms with my anxiety. It will always be there but I do I feel that I have the upper hand and can keep it in check most of the time. It’s always rather empowering when I overcome it and do something that it might have prevented me from doing. I’m certainly not ashamed of it. It’s part of who I am. I will always be a worry-wart and a scaredy-cat. I will always be what some consider ‘too sensitive’ but now I don’t see it as a weakness, I see it as one of my super-powers. I can face my fears and feel like I’ve climbed a mountain. The constant rush of thoughts can be draining though and that is why I love reading so much. I can escape into a novel or the simple act of writing. For so long I always felt that I was rather weird/odd but actually when I come to think of it it’s simply the author in me creating a million stories to write, adventures to follow and battles to be fought. So, maybe now I just need to be brave and get them all written…instead of worrying about where it will (or won’t) take me.
Now I'd like to finish with one of my favourite quotes courtesy of Lewis Carroll.
Mad Matter: "Have I gone mad?"
Alice: "I'm afraid so. You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are.”
Now here is more about Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow by Siobhan Curham...

Mini Book Reviews #5: Books
*I am reviewing this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own. *
Title: Secrets For The Mad Author: dodie ClarkPublisher: Ebury PressSource: NetGalleyRating: 4/5 stars
(Amazon|Goodreads)
Book Review:
As many are, I am a fan of dodie's youtube channel so when I saw that this was available to review I was super excited. Secrets For The Mad is a solid and honest read, different from other youtube books with a deeply personal touch.
As a subscriber of dodie's I do really love how honest she is in the book. A lot of the things that she discusses especially how she deals with alcohol, mental illness and a past relationship is so sensitive but she shares it so openly. It was great to read someone opening up of their issues as it could really help those who need it.
I also think that dodie is a great writer. As I said she is honest and her writing has a raw and poetic quality to it that I loved and enjoyed reading. The book also features her songs and personal photos in it which was really lovely and a nice addition to the book. Overall, it was just great!
The Verdict:
Secrets For The Mad is a deeply interesting a personal read, perfect for those who love dodie's channel or otherwise.
Title: Star Struck Author: Jenny McLachlan Publisher: BloomsburySource: NetGalleyRating: 5/5 stars
(Amazon|Goodreads)
Book Review:
I have been a fan of Jenny McLachlan's books since I read Sunkissed which is the third book in this series of Ladybird books. One of the highlights was Pearl so I was excited to get a whole book from her perspective. Star Struck did not disappoint being the ultimate cute summer read.
A did truly love this book. I think that Pearl is such an interesting character and Jenny definitely developed into why this was the case. Pearl's home life isn't easy and he faces abuse from her family and her home life is far from the best but this what makes her who she is. I also think that she knows how to balance the dark aspects of the story with light as her books are funny and light-hearted at many stages.
I loved the way that this story progressed and the ending of this book definitely make my heart melt. It changed what was a four-star story into a five-star story and I ship it so much. Jenny McLachlan is just a master of YA contemporary and everyone should read one of her books.
The Verdict:
Starstruck was an emotional rollercoaster of emotions but is a great read that everyone can enjoy!
Title: The Taste of Blue LightAuthor: Lydia RufflesPublisher: BkmrkSource: NetGalleyRating: 2.5/5 stars
(Amazon|Goodreads)
Book Review:
The Taste of Blue Light was getting some hype when it first released and for good reason as it has a very unique premise. Although being a unique book, I couldn't connect with this personally but this could be very different for someone else.
Honestly part of the reason why I didn't like this book was that I was confused. There were some bits that I understood but I feel like there was just a lot that I didn't understand and I think that this really affected my overall enjoyment of the book that I just didn't like it.
I do still want to read more of Lydia's work but this one just didn't do it for me. I did just the writing but not connecting with the story or the main protagonist did make me feel badly against the book. I have also heard people really enjoy it so this may just be a case that I didn't like t but you might.
Since reading this book, I have also heard Lydia speak at YALC where she spoke more about what this book and Colour Me In are about so this might be a book that I come back to in the future. If this happens, hopefully, my experience will be more positive than the first time.
The Verdict:
The Taste of Blue Light was an interesting read that wasn't for me but could be the perfect read for you. Definitely, one to read to find out what you think yourself!
Title: FlooredAuthor: VariousPublisher: Pan MacMillan Source: NetGalleyRating: 5/5 stars
(Amazon|Goodreads)
Book Review:
When Floored was announced, I was so excited. Combining the Queens of YA, Floored was going to be an epic read. I was so right and Floored was amazing, definitely one of my favourite reads of the year so far.
I do think that the whole idea of this book is so ambitious but it definitely pays off. All of the characters are so loveable and I think that the way that they develop over the five years that this book is set is so great. I do think that Hugo develops a lot through the course of the book and I love how he goes from being the arsehole to less of an arsehole and has feelings. He does some bad things in this book that I do not agree with but he does change in the book.
All the characters in the book are great. I did like Joe as a character as he was just really sensitive and I felt for his whole situation. Also, Dawson and Sasha and Kaitlyn and Velvet are great and I feel like they all have individual voices which are so good but it is written by lots of authors so that kind of is expected.
The breaks also have a WhatsApp group which I loved reading about and seeing the characters in the book. The ending definitely broke me and I loved it. I would love so much more from these characters but I feel like that is a massive ask for the authors so I will just gush about how much I love this one!
The Verdict:
Floored is a masterclass of YA showing complex characters and an engaging story so is definitely worth the read!
Title: Shadow and BoneAuthor: Leigh BardugoPublisher: Bkmrk Source: NetGalleyRating: 5/5 stars
(Amazon|Goodreads)
Book Review:
So this book is weird. I actually read this book years ago but when I saw it on NetGalley I couldn't help but pick it up as not enough people have read this book so hopefully, this review will inspire you. I love Shadow and Bone and hope you do too.
The weird thing is that I kind of feel like I was early to the party because I hear so many people talking about the Six of Crows duology but not many discussing this one but I've always liked this more than that book. I feel like because it is based on Russian mythology and the first time I read it I was studying Russian history.
I just feel like Leigh Bardugo sets up the world so nicely in this book that I was grabbed in. I feel in love with Alina and Mal. There relationship and just the whole adventure that takes place. I definitely do need to reread it but my TBR is massive and I know if I start I would want to reread the series so...
Basically, this review is telling you how great this series is and that you need to read it!
The Verdict:
Shadow and Bone is a book that shows what Leigh Bardugo does best. It is a masterclass in YA fantasy and is a book that everyone should read.
Have you read any one of these? If so what did you think of them?

Book Review: Ascension by Victor Dixen
*I am reviewing this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own. *
Title: AscensionAuthor: Victor DixenPublisher: Hot Key BooksSource: Readers FirstRating: 5/5 stars
(Amazon|Goodreads)
Book Summary:
Six girls, six boys. Each in the two separate bays of a single spaceship. They have six minutes each week to seduce and to make their choices, under the unblinking eye of the on-board cameras. They are the contenders in the Genesis programme, the world's craziest speed-dating show ever, aimed at creating the first human colony on Mars.
Leonor, an 18 year old orphan, is one of the chosen ones.
She has signed up for glory.
She has signed up for love.
She has signed up for a one-way ticket.
Even if the dream turns to a nightmare, it is too late for regrets.
Book Review:
I was excited to read Ascension as Hot Key were describing this as Love Island in space and much like the rest of the UK, I have been hooked by the show that has just finished. This description is so accurate but it was so much more. I even loved this book so much that I read this rather than watched Love Island. This is amazing for me in itself.
I feel like this book was so great because it does marry romance, thriller and of course sci-fi elements so well. It is, in essence, a science fiction book, it's theme is about a colonising Mars by making a TV show about those travelling to Mars falling in love. I definitely loved the sci-fi element of this book and I definitely think that the romance in the book is so interesting especially how it plays out.
I also think that the protagonist was quite dislikable at times and was quite stereotypical but I don't think that this truly affected my time reading it. To me, much of my focus was on the story and how that unfolded as this gripped my attention. I also think that all the characters were diverse. In sci-fi, there is a habit to whitewash the characters but there were so many characters from around the world who had a disability and this added to the story.
So this story is translated and I do feel like the story was not lost in translation. The writing was quite simple but this did not affect me at all. I also definitely liked the different POVs because of the isolation of the main protagonist and added depth to the story. Most importantly, I raced through the story and it was so addictive. I just want to find out what happens next!
The Verdict:
Ascension was a fast-paced read that kept me hooked throughout making me crave the next one in the series.

ARC August 2018
OK, so it's been a while. I've been on holiday, I graduated, I went to YALC and continued working on my WIP but I want to start posting again. I've known for a while that I wanted to do ARC August which is hosted by Read, Sleep, Repeat as I have so many NetGalley and ARCs to read so this is a get way to do this.

BLOG TOUR: A Bad Boy Stole My Bra by Lauren Price Book Review
*I am reviewing this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own. *
Title: A Bad Boy Stole My BraAuthor: Lauren PricePublisher: Ink RoadSource: PublisherRating: 3.5/5 stars
(Amazon|Goodreads)
Book Summary:
Imagine waking up in the dead of night to find your hot new neighbour dangling out of your window. What’s more, he's clutching your tattiest bra in his hand.What. The. Actual. Fudge. When bad boy Alec Wilde moves in next door to Riley, sparks fly. After their 'unconventional' introduction, Riley is determined to get her own back. A nemesis is just the distraction she needs: inside, she's barely holding it together. It's game on.But behind the banter, there's a side to Alec that Riley actually likes. How can she get through to the real him when she can't even take herself seriously?Book Review:When I heard about A Bad Boy Stole My Bra I was excited about the concept of this book. I really enjoy books with a swoon-worthy romance and those that have comedic elements. ABBSMB does actually that it offers a romance that you will eat and is such a light tone that makes it a great read.
Let's get the negatives out the way first. There were just things I didn't really like. I mean it is a small thing but there's no swearing in the book. This is probably because when writing the book, the author was quite young so she might not want to do it but in place, we get these other words like grasshole which is used a lot. It's such a small thing but I did find it annoying to read it all the time.
I did really like the overall tone of the book, it was comedic and fun, definitely a good read. This was partly due to the prank war involvement which was fun and unique which was one of the reasons why I highly enjoyed the book. This lead to the connection between Alec and Riley. I really liked seeing their relationship grow over the course of the novel and seeing the romance bloom. It was a hate/love relationship which I kind of didn't enjoy but this was a small part of the story so it didn't affect my enjoyment that much. I also raced through the second part of this book and devoured it, it was definitely a quick read.
There was also anxiety representation in this book which definitely added to the light romance story as diversity is not included in these stories. Although a small part of the book, it was still a good representation and it was nice to see. This was also seen with the lesbian couple in the book as this was a good touch and it was a nice part of diversity and representation. The Verdict:A Bad Boy Stole My Bra is the perfect summer read full of romance and comedy. It a great funny YA novel.Have you read A Bad Boy Stole My Bra? Do you want to?

Open Letter: To The Next Occupier
To the Next Occupier,
This is tough to write which is weird because you are never going to read this. I mean you might but let's face it it's unlikely. You might be wondering why I am writing this? This isn't to you, this is to those who are actually reading this. Well at the beginning of this month. I graduated. From my degree from somewhere, I have spent the last three years of my life. But the thing is that I spent two years of my life in this house. Now your house. It wasn't perfect but let's be real what is. I thought that this could somehow be a self-help to you on how to live in that house but I think that this is for me and let's be real you will figure it out. A chapter of my life has literally ended. Two years of my life were spent in that house but so much happened there and I know that by writing this it might help.
So let me begin by saying this was not what I was going to write today. Every time I see this in my drafts, I think No way, I think I kind of thought that it would never happen. I started to continue working on my novel yesterday for the first time since November before University got too much and I stopped but it seems ironic now. You see I am currently procrastinating on a scene in which the main character doesn't understand why the other character is so upset about going to university and I know why. (The funny thing is that I procrastinated this too.)
University was a place where I accepted who I was and was about to be myself. To some people, I came across as shy and anxious which is who I am and I have accepted this. I discovered that I have a mental illness which makes me that way and I have accepted that. On the other side, I have discovered that I can be myself. That weirdo who loves singing and dancing (badly) to my favourite songs and who doesn't care whose watching. A girl who at times can be sassy and adventurous and sometimes likes to take risks. I have discovered so much about myself from this place which went way too fast, it doesn't feel like three years. I think I have turned into one of those people who questions the time. "It's gone so fast," they said. And I will reply, "Yes. Can I do it again." Because although University has given me some of the worst days and experiences of my life it has also given me some of the best. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
Seriously.
Without this place, I wouldn't have had the best experiences of my life and discovered things that I love. One of those things is that I love to write. I think of the time that I discovered I could write. It was in my first year and I discovered that that idea that I had in my head could be written. The same idea that currently has 30,000 words written. I wouldn't have joined my University's Writing Society which means that I wouldn't haven't met all the people that I know now. I wouldn't have explored writing which is something that I love so much and want to continue doing.
Most importantly are the people that I met. I met people that I saw for less than two hours and I feel like the made an impact on my lives. There were people that I met along the way that I know I am never going to forget. I will remember the times that we spent together. Laughing. Crying. Talking. Just being there in the moment. I will remember. The truth I don't know if we will stay in touch. You may have noticed that I am terrible at texting and consistent contact. This is because I want to have a face to face conversation and if I even had one with you I won't have forgotten it.
So I guess that the whole idea of this post is that to me University was one of the best things I ever did. I know it's not for everyone but for me it was the right choice.
I have a degree now, only the second one in my family and it's a 2.1 at that. I worked for blood, sweat and many, many tears to get it and I am so happy. So much so that I wanted to stay (for 2 years) as I am doing an MA.
So to the next occupier, I hope university is all that you want it to be. I hope that it is the rollercoaster that it should be. You will learn that way.
Good luck!
Amy

Good luck!
Amy

BLOG TOUR: No Sad Songs by Frank Morelli Book Review
*I am reviewing this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own. *
Title: No Sad SongsAuthor: Frank MorelliPublisher: Fish Out Of Water BooksSource: PublisherRating: 4/5 stars
(Amazon|Goodreads)
Book Summary:
Following a family tragedy, 18-year-old Gabe LoScuda suddenly finds himself thrust into the role of caregiver for his ailing grandfather. Between the shopping trips and the doctor visits with Grandpa, Gabe and his friend John try to salvage their senior year, meet girls, and make the varsity baseball team. It doesn’t take long for Gabe to realize that going to school and looking after a grandfather with Alzheimer’s is more work than he ever imagined. And when long-lost Uncle Nick appears on the scene, Gabe soon finds that living with Nick and Grandpa is like babysitting two grown men. Aside from John, the only person who truly understands Gabe is Sofia, a punk-rocking rebel he meets at the veteran’s hospital. When these three unlikely friends are faced with a serious dilemma, will they do what it takes to save Grandpa? If there’s a chance of preserving the final shreds of Grandpa’s dignity, Gabe may have to make the most gut-wrenching decision of his life—and there’s no way out.
Book Review:
When I first was offered to read a copy of No Sad Songs I was excited. I didn't really know what it was about except that it was a YA with a male protagonist set it in the 1990s. I, therefore, went in with low expectations, after all, I didn't know what it was about but No Sad Songs was an example of how to write an amazing YA book that everyone should read.
So one of the high points of this book is definitely the writing, it was very well written and there were elements that just really added to the overall story. This was especially well illustrated with the personal essays in the book which were a great touch and allowed the reader to explore Gabe's character even more than we previously would have. As someone who really loves reading essays, Gabe's were really good at exploring his history. Thi book is also really short so to fit a story of this length and for it to be amazing is great in itself.
I think that this is definitely a great thing about Gabe. As someone who reads a lot of YA, the male characters are normally real douchebags and don't tend to be good characters but this was completely the opposite with No Sad Songs. Gabe wears his heart on his sleeve and is a character that you want to root for as his past is rocky and you want him to do well in life. He came alive from the page and I just wanted to give him a massive hug.
Gabe's story is based on his family which is so well done in this book. Morelli does an amazing job of exploring the family relationship between Gabe and his grandfather in this book that is heartbreaking and so great. This is especially fantastic in the grand scheme of the book as Gabe gives everything to his grandfather so seen his evolve in the plot is heartwrenching. The book also focuses on Alzheimer's and was done really well and I would love to see his being tackled in the book. With this family relationship being the core this was different to most other YAs and I want to see this done more. This book was just so good!
The Verdict:
No Sad Songs is an excellent YA book that will have you hooked emotionally on the characters and the journeys that they take.
