I'll grab a book or sit outside or work out. This time out can be very helpful. Other days, I write nonfiction or edit to work the other half of my brain. It's kind of like the good cop, bad cop scenario. One side is analytical and the other is creative. Sometimes I need a balance of both to stay on track.

If I'm writing and I get stuck, I just keep writing. I skip a few lines and write what I know happens next. Or, I'll even type up a mini-synopsis of what needs to happen and move forward with the storytelling further ahead. If none of these things work, I'll issue myself a dare, or a challenge. I'll pull a word out of the dictionary (my new favorite one is fusty) or pick the first object I see around me and challenge myself to write those into the scene. This usually kick starts the creative juices.

If all else fails, I'll take a shower. Ideas never fail to hit me when I'm sopping wet without a pen and paper handy!(less)

It is so magical to know that my words have touched other people's lives. On some level, I've made them think. I've made them feel. I've given them a perspective they might otherwise have missed.

I love helping people, and that extends to my writing. Just as my characters grow throughout a story, so should my readers. (less)

As parents, it is our jobs to worry. My oldest child hated to read. Every word that made it from paper to his brain was a fight. Oh, he’d listen to me read all day long, but getting him to pick up a book on his own was akin to torture. One exception was C.S. Lewis and other classics like White Fang. Tough books for a little boy with dyslexia.

But this wasn’t the first time I’d had to worry exten...

“The concept behind personal integrity is wholeness. When a person is the same without as within, when what others know about him is the same truth he knows about himself, he has integrity.”
