I'm glad you enjoyed the advance copy. To answer your question, I like writing characters who are at a crossroads in their lives. Characters who may have spent years hiding their personas behind a cloak of invincibility only to find themselves suddenly vulnerable. Characters who are facing a crisis and are forced to question their life choices. Then I apply an outside threat to help expose a hidden wrong or uncover a buried secret and see how my characters react. (less)

I have no idea where to begin. Picture books? Charlotte’s Web? Stuart Little? Every Nancy Drew mystery ever written? My Victoria Holt phase? Or when I got snobby and only read the classics and somehow learned to love Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Bronte and Wharton? My passion for short stories by Flannery O’Connor, Katherine Anne Porter, Tillie Olsen and Ellen Gilchrist? My love for William Styron’s novels, especially Sophie’s Choice. How about Cormac McCarthy’s The Road which I’ve read multiple times? But I suppose when it comes to suspense there are two authors that top my list: Patricia Highsmith and Daphne du Maurier. Patricia Highsmith was so talented she wrote a short story about a killer snail that spooked me for days. And Daphne du Maurier’s short story, The Birds, runs rings around Hitchcock’s film adaptation. I could go on and on but if I do I’ll never get back to my latest read.

MY FAVORITE READS OF 2022

The five novels listed below weren’t published this year. I’m a slow reader and always on the hunt for great books no matter what year they were born. I also like to return to the classicsPatricia Highsmith; Daphne du Maurier; Katherine Anne Porter. They up my writing game. But the following books top my 2022 list of new reads. Mostly suspense. All woman authors. Highly recommend each and every on
