Reviews:

“Richly drawn characters, the vibrant historical setting, and a suspenseful mystery create a strong current that pulls readers into this delightful novel. But it's the women's issues—as relevant today as they were in the early 1900s—that will linger long after the last page."

-- Donna S. Meredith, The Southern Literary Review

Can two women get the lowdown on high society?

“Two powerless young women must navigate a soul-crushing class system and find the levers of power they wield when they combine their strengths. These women may have been taught to whisper, but when their time comes, they will roar.”

– 5 Star Amazon Review

Louisa Delafield and Ellen Malloy didn’t ask to be thrown together to bring the truth to light. But after Ellen witnesses the death of a fellow servant during an illegal abortion, Louisa, a society columnist, vows to help her find the truth and turn her journalistic talent to a greater purpose.

Together, these unlikely allies battle to get the truth out, and to avenge the wrongful death of a friend.

What will our heroes do when their closest allies and those they trust turn out to be the very forces working to keep their story in the dark? They’ll face an abortionist, a sex trafficking ring, and a corrupt system determined to keep the truth at bay.

“If you like historical fiction and if you like mysteries, this one is for you!”

– 5 Star Amazon Review

Eighteen-year-old Jamel Frederickson is shot and killed by a white, rookie Dallas police officer. His crime? Being black and mentally ill.
Following that unwarranted death, anger, and violence erupts on the streets, leading to the murders of two protestors who were marching around the downtown federal building.
Detectives Sarah Kingsly and Angel Johnson are thrust into the investigation of those murders, while desperately clinging to the threads of their partnership.
The shootings also raise questions about whether the alt-right white supremacists that invaded the city with their guns and inflammatory rhetoric are responsible.
Will more people get killed?
Is there more than one person out there with an agenda?
When a member of the team, Ryan O’Donnell, is shot while attempting to prevent looting, the tension in the city, and the department, ratchets up even higher. And it deeply affects Angel who’s been pretending she really isn’t falling for this white man.
Angel joins the protests to take a stand against racism in the city and within the department; an action that puts her job, her relationship with Ryan, and her fragile partnership with Sarah at risk.
For her part, Sarah comes to realize that she is not as enlightened as she thought she was, and both women just hope they can come through the personal and professional challenges and end up with something that resembles a true partnership.
While catching the killers in the process.

In today’s world, law enforcement agencies across the country rely on forensic tools, DNA testing, and crime labs. But what if that technology was suddenly no longer available? No one in the small, west Texas town of Shadow Ridge knows what took down the power grid, or when it’s going to be back up, but everyone knows exactly where they were the moment it went down. And now, with no electricity, no internet, and no modern technology, the men and women responsible for keeping the town safe are going to have to learn how to fight crime all over again.

When one of the men in charge of storing food for the town of Shadow Ridge is found murdered execution style, it’s up to Jace McQuaid to find the killer. What he discovers is a group of organized raiders who are stealing supplies and selling them on the black market—and the survival of the town depends on stopping them.
Morgan Addison’s estranged brother, Ricky, shows up at her house demanding weapons and confirming her fears that he’s a part of the outlaws. Tensions are raised further when Ricky kidnaps her son to ensure his safe passage out of town. Jace must find a way to save Noah and ensure the survival of Shadow Ridge.

_________________________________________________

Something catastrophic has happened and the world is plunged into the dark; the electric grid is down. Modern life grinds to a halt, and the people of Shadow Ridge struggle to survive, rationing food and medicine and learning how to live off the land like their ancestors once did.

Cut off from the world, life goes on. Jace McQuaid, who was in town for his parent’s anniversary, and his brother pick up the reins of law enforcement and attempt to keep their town safe. But a violent death rocks their little community and he must track a killer using only his own ingenuity. Meanwhile, Jace has got a thing for Morgan Addison, a widow with an endearing child but she is keeping him at arm’s length. When her no good brother-in-law returns to town, Jace must act fast to save their lives.

I found the premise for this mystery thriller intriguing; life after some type of disaster turns back the clock on daily life. The author presents a satisfying picture of what that life might look like. Struggles, cooperation and of course division. At the heart of the story is a murder mystery and Jace must track the killer without modern technology, they have only one or two cell phones that they charge using solar power and little else. Jace’s sister is a doctor with a dwindling supply of medicine. She works with others to create native medicine to treat infections and other ailments. And of course, there is the slow building romance between Jace and Morgan.

The book is well-written with a clean narrative. There is an overlay of christian values. I enjoyed this book which is the first in a series, and I look forward to reading more about Shadow Ridge and its inhabitants. Recommend to readers who enjoy clean fiction, mystery thrillers, and slow burn romance.

 I rate this book 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐stars

Review: Homicide Herault by Bluette Matthey

The Details:

Homicide Herault by Bluette Matthey

Publisher: Blue Shutter Publishing

Published: December 2022

Genre: Murder Mystery/Travel Guide

Pages: 199

Available: ebook, paperback

TW: murder, some violence, human trafficking. Nothing graphic

The Blurb:

Veteran trekker Hardy Durkin leads his first bike tour group to Béziers in the South of France, during its annual grand Feria, for what is expected to be relaxing, uneventful bicycling in the Hérault region. This notion is kicked to the curb when a double cold-case with present-day repercussions is discovered on one of the group’s outings. Hardy becomes embroiled in another homicide when he is present at a murder that takes place during an innocent flamenco performance that is anything but.
The bottom line: murder and intrigue follow Hardy Durkin like a shadow, even in the sunny, laid-back South of France, but this time his wheel of fortune veers uncomfortably off the rails in Homicide Hérault.

My Review:

Two men, both military, one American, one French, are desperate to deliver a film that will rock French politics. Others are out to stop them. Decades later their bodies are discovered by a group of Americans on a biking holiday in Beziers, France. Luckily, their tour guide is none other than Hardy Durkin, a man of talent, ability and a more than a whiff of mystery. As multiple forces attempt to control the fallout from the finding of the bodies, a second murder occurs at a flamenco performance and once again, Hardy and his trekkers are in the thick of it...

If there was ever a book that shouldn’t be judged by its cover, Homicide Herault is it. My apologies to the cover designer but in my opinion, it hinders rather than helps. Inside this blah cover is a fun, lively book packed with historical tidbits, amazing description of the small towns that dot the South of France, food, wine, along with spies, intrigues and of course a set of murders that must be solved.

The writing is good, the pace is swift, and the author makes use of an omniscient POV to narrate the story from multiple viewpoints.  A lover of murder mysteries, I enjoyed the investigation and dramatic resolution of the crimes. I especially loved the history of the region including the tragic stories of Cathars and the Knights Templar. The travel descriptions made me drool with envy and Beziers in now at the top of my bucket list of places to visit.

I highly recommend this enjoyable read for lover of murder mysteries set in unique locations with the added bonus of a history lesson threaded through the story.

I rate this book: 5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Award-winning Author Anita Dickason is a twenty-two-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department. She served as a patrol officer, undercover narcotics detective, advanced accident investigator, tactical officer, and first female sniper on the Dallas SWAT team.

Anita writes about what she knows, cops and crime. Her police background provides an unending source of inspiration for her plots and characters. Many incidents and characters portrayed in her books are based on personal experience. For her, the characters are the fun part of writing as she never knows where they will take her. There is always something out of the ordinary in her stories.

In Anita’s debut novel, Sentinels of the Night, she created an elite FBI Unit, the Trackers. Since then, she has added three more Tracker crime thrillers, Going Gone!, A u 7 9, and Operation Navajo, which are not a series and can be read in any order, and Deadly Business, a crime thriller.

As a Texas author, many of Anita’s books are based in Texas, or there is a link to Texas. When she stepped outside of the Tracker novels and wrote Not Dead and the Tori Winters Mysteries series, she set them in the small Texas communities of Meridian and Granbury, respectively.

In the spring of 1939, dashing young William Burton and the beautiful Constance Han set sail from London on the same ocean liner to Hong Kong.

Romance blossoms while they enjoy games of deck quoits and spend sultry tropical evenings dancing under the stars. Connie is intrigued by Will’s talent for writing poetry, and she offers to give him Cantonese lessons to help him with his new job— a cadet in the colonial service.

But once in Hong Kong, Connie is constrained by filial duty towards her Eurasian parents, and their wish for her to marry someone from her own background. She can't forget Will however and arranges to meet him in secret under the magnificent canopy of a flame of the forest tree—where she fulfils her promise to teach him to speak Chinese.

Before too long, trouble looms as Japanese forces gather on the border between Hong Kong and mainland China. Will joins a commando group tasked with operating behind enemy lines, and Connie becomes involved in the fight against local fifth columnists.

When war breaks out, they find themselves drawn into a wider conflict than their battle against prejudice. Can they survive and achieve a future together? Or do forces beyond their control keep them forever apart?

Based on a little-known true story, The Flame Tree is a tale of love and survival against all the odds.

Had Anna been allowed to choose, she’d have become a time-traveller. As this was impossible, she became a financial professional with two absorbing interests: history and writing. Anna has authored the acclaimed time travelling series The Graham Saga, set in 17th century Scotland and Maryland, as well as the equally acclaimed medieval series The King’s Greatest Enemy which is set in 14th century England.

Anna has also published The Wanderer, a fast-paced contemporary romantic suspense trilogy with paranormal and time-slip ingredients.

Her Castilian Heart is the third in her “Castilian” series, a stand-alone sequel to her September 2020 release, His Castilian Hawk. Set against the complications of Edward I’s invasion of Wales, His Castilian Hawk is a story of loyalty, integrity—and love. In the second instalment, The Castilian Pomegranate, we travel with the protagonists to the complex political world of medieval Spain. This latest release finds our protagonists back in England—not necessarily any safer than the wilds of Spain!

Review: The Meadowlark by B.C. Walker

The Meadowlark by B.C. Walker

Published: 2022

Publisher: Indie

Pages: 435

Genre: Historical Fiction/ Dual Time Line

Available: ebook, paperback, audio

The Meadowlark by B.C. Walker is a dual-time novel that takes place in modern time and in the past from 1885 until 1936. It is the story of two women, Emma Rose, a rising star in the business consulting world and Cassie Rapp Walker who we first meet as a young girl. Cassie and her family are pioneer settlers in the territory of Idaho, they make their home near the banks of Willow Creek. Emma and her mother are mystified when her father requests to be buried in a rural Idaho town, Willow Creek. Here, the past and present collide in a touching story of love, family, tragedy and resilience.

I really enjoyed reading the Cassie timeline, filled with history and the pioneering spirit. The author does a great job of fleshing out her very interesting and at times difficult life.  The Emma story, for me, dragged a bit in the first half of the book with a lot of background details that didn’t really add much to the story. This modern timeline picked up speed in the second half of the book and I found it much more engaging, with a sweet romance and a mystery to solve.

Well written and edited, the book is a treat to read. I highly recommend this book to lovers of historical fiction and those how enjoy dual timeline stories.

I rate this book 4 ½ ⭐⭐⭐⭐★stars

The Blurb:

** F inalist in the 2022 American Writing Awards **

Millions are fans of Diana Gabaldon’s popular Outlander books and television series, but few know that Gabaldon’s fictional Castle Leoch was inspired by a real Scottish castle, Castle Leod. The two sisters who lived there at the turn of the twentieth century were among the most fascinating and talked-about women of their era.

Lady Sibell Mackenzie is a spiritualist, a believer in reincarnation, and a popular author of mystical romances. Petite and proper, she values tradition and duty. Her younger sister Lady Constance, swimming champion and big game hunter, is a statuesque beauty who scandalizes British society with her public displays of Greek-style barefoot dancing. The differences between the sisters escalate into conflict after Sibell inherits their late father’s vast estates and the title 3rd Countess of Cromartie. But it is the birth of Sibell’s daughter that sets in motion a series of bizarre and tragic events, pitting sister against sister and propelling Sibell on a desperate mission to challenge the power of fate.

Sisters of Castle Leod, by award-winning author Elizabeth Hutchison Bernard, is the emotionally charged story of two sisters torn apart by jealousy and superstition, and the impossible leap of faith that could finally bring them together.

Review and Book Blitz: Find The Moon by Beth Fehlbaum

FIND THE MOON
By Beth FehlbaumYoung Adult / Social Issues / Family IssuesPublisher: Progressive Rising Phoenix PressPages: 298 pagesExpected Publication Date: January 10, 2023

For as long as she can remember, Kylie Briscoe's been searching for the moon even though she has no idea why it soothes her. Placed in an impossible situation by her mother, Kylie cries for help. It brings rescuers and a new life, but it feels more like a death sentence when she is separated from her three-year-old sister Aliza, the only person Kylie's ever really loved.
Now she's in tiny Patience, Texas, with her eccentric potty-mouthed grandmother, ever-patient stargazing grandfather, an uncle who reminds her a lot of a cop who terrified her during a drug bust, a herd of Norwegian Dwarf goats, their "guard donkeys," and three canine roommates occupying Kylie's former nursery.
When the authorities make a mistake that could cost her everything, Kylie must decide whether to tell the truth-all of it-in order to save herself and her sister.

Kylie Jean Briscoe has a big problem: her abusive mother, and things are about to get worse. A drug addict whose mothering skills are nonexistent, she neglects her daughters, who must fend for themselves, and she places them in grave danger with her reckless choices. When her mother is arrested, Kylie Jean and her three-year-old half-sister are taken into care. Kylie is distraught, as Aliza is claimed by a father she’s never known. Kylie’s grandparents, who have lived in hope of seeing her again, are given custody of her. The separation from her sister is traumatic but Kylie tries to put her life back together in the loving environment of her grandparents’ farm. But Kylie soon learns that love alone cannot heal her unseen wounds.
Find the Moon by Beth Fehlbaum is a gritty, raw YA story of survival, healing and forgiveness. The story explores the painful subject of child exploitation, abuse and neglect. The harshness of Kylie’s life is balanced by the loving kindness found in her grandparents and her uncle. This book is an emotional read, and the author doesn’t take the easy way out by painting Kylie’s new life as a bed of roses. Instead, she allows her to battle her personal demons, make mistakes, learn to trust and love and eventually heal.
I highly recommend this book to readers who appreciate realistic and heartfelt stories. Be aware that it includes subjects some readers may find uncomfortable and/or painful.
I rate this book 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Beth Fehlbaum is the author of the young adult novels Find the Moon, Big Fat Disaster (on the Spirit of Texas-High School Reading List, 2014-2015), Courage in Patience, Hope in Patience (A YALSA Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers), and Truth in Patience. With Dr. Matt E. Jaremko, Beth co-wrote the creative nonfiction book, Trauma Recovery: Sessions with Dr. Matt. She is a high school English teacher.
Authenticity, calling out hypocrisy, and finding one's voice are frequent themes in Beth's work, and they are absolutely essential themes in her life, as well. Beth has a B.A. in English, minor in secondary education, and an M.Ed. in reading. Beth is in-demand as an author-panelist, having presented/appeared at the Texas Library Association Annual Conference, the American Library Association's annual conference, YALSA, N.C.T.E./ALAN, and numerous YA book festivals. She's a member of The Author's Guild, SCBWI, Romance Writers of America, and the Texas Federation of Teachers.  She loves doing school visits and meeting teens, teachers, and librarians!
Beth lives in the woods of East Texas in a house on a slice of family acreage. The home was built by her family over one very hot humid summer, a task she wishes never to repeat again. This sanctuary-of-sorts is lined by pine trees, and the woods are inhabited by raccoons, possums, and feral cats. All of these creatures appear to consider Beth their cat-food-providing goddess. There is no place she would rather be.
