I was born in England, near the Welsh border, and lived in several places while I was growing up, including a spell in Singapore and in Malta. Malta was where I got hooked on historical romances - my parents rented a furnished house, and the owners had left most of their books there, including a whole set of Georgette Heyer novels.

Loving Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer, I longed to write similar novels myself. I toyed with the idea several times over the years, but real life intervened and I've had several careers, including as a non-fiction author under another name. That wasn’t quite the writing career I had in mind…

So here I am, finally publishing my stories. I hope you enjoy them!

I'm currently working on the fourth book in The Marstone Series, to be called The Fourth Marchioness. As usual, it is progressing more slowly than I'd hoped, but should be published early in the new year.
That will be all for the Marstone Series for the moment (unless new stories occur to me!). I have an idea for a completely standalone story, and another idea for a two or three book series, about men who are prisoners of war during the Napoleonic War and what happens when they return home.

Hi Joanna - thanks for the review!
I didn't think of The Mrs MacKinnons as part of a series, but I do have one or two ideas for short stories or novellas that might include some of the characters. (A lot of people liked Richard, and I'd love to write about Webb again!). But at the moment I'm concentrating on the Marstone Series.(less)

Barrington Court, Somerset

My visits to gardens and historic houses have been severely curtailed this year, for obvious reasons. However places are beginning to open up again, partially, at least. The National Trust […]

The Martian by Andy Weir
I tested the brackets by hitting them with rocks. This kind of sophistication is what we interplanetary scientists are known for.
There’s a great story (I don’t know if it’s true or not) about the difference between science and engineering. A toothpaste factory was having a problem. Once in a while, the assembly line would churn out an empty box with no tube of toothpaste in it. The empty box would end up packed with a bunch of normal boxes in a crates and sent off to stores. The retailers would then get mad that they got a factory dud. So the management called in experts to look over the assembly line. The experts did a bunch of analysis and found the problem. Unfortunately, it would cost millions to redesign the ...more

The Martian by Andy Weir
How come Aquaman can control whales? They’re mammals! Makes no sense.
After the book came out, I received many, many, MANY answers to this question by devout comic book fans. So, here’s the answer: Aquaman is a very powerful telepath. His ability to command animals isn’t limited to sea life. In fact, in some cases he’s actually used his telepathy to control humans. But he has more experience using telepathy to control sea life because that’s what he has access to. So, just as he can control fish, he can also control whales, dolphins, and even seagulls.

"What the hell??

Shockingly & badly handled tale of love and mistrust.
Cam is cruel & Natasha is too bloody soft. So many elements of their characters, laid out for us at the start of the novel, were kicked to the kerb later. So the characters we sta" Read more of this review »
