I live, work, and play in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area, and I spent most of my childhood drawing monsters and looking for bugs in hot and humid Houston, Texas.

My latest book, One Tiny Treefrog, created with my creative partner and wife, Mackenzie Joy, is out now. This book is the first of three non-fiction, nature picture books being published by Candlewick Press. We hope these books will inspire children and their families to learn more about all the other life that calls Earth home.

In my spare time, I also help make animated movies, nurse native plant gardens, and cook frijoles negros con arroz y mucho mas.

My debut picture book, The Greatest Adventure, is published in English and Spanish by Scholastic.

Levine Books back in February 2015. On that cold, winter day I presented Arthur a "sneak peek" of a story I had been developing. And although he didn’t care for the project I shared with him, he ended up asking me a very poignant question, “Why did you choose to write that story?” And in response I told Arthur about my childhood in Houston. I told him how my notion of adventure was shaped by stories my father told me about his childhood in the Bahamas.  Stories filled with gliding manta rays and schools of flashing, silver fish, stories which made me long, even at that early age, to have a great adventure of my own. And this childhood sentiment, drawn out from me by the probing of a thoughtful editor became the seed for The Greatest Adventure.

Digital Painting

How I made the Art for The Greatest Adventure! BlogHeader.jpg

I'm often asked how I create my illustrations.  In this post I will share with you my process for creating the artwork for my debut picture book, The Greatest Adventure. I won’t go in to great detail on each step in the process, instead, my goal is to impart on you a basic understanding of what it means to create a digital painting. And hopefully
