As an outsider and an orphan, Emily represents the unknown. Tom's instantaneous infatuation caused him to think that he had been bewitched - and her actions towards him later on turn her into quite a sinister figure. I always wanted Emily to be a mystery because neither Tom, nor Caroline understand who (or what) she is.

Gareth is an alluring seducer. He allowed Caroline to act out her desires in the safety of a dream. She rationalized that it wasn't wrong because it wasn't happening. And this created all sorts of problems for Caroline later on. I look upon the ganconer myth as more of a warning to young women about the loss of virtue.

So much of fairy folklore is psychological in nature. They were almost always viewed as threats. The changeling myth resulted in real murders throughout history. When superstition is involved, people can behave in a crazy manner. I chose to display this aspect in Dreams and Reason because a central theme of the book is madness. The truth about Gareth and Emily is less important than how Caroline and Tom view them.
