I just stop, and do something else - go for a walk, drink a glass of wine, read a book or two or five. Until now that's worked (but the plots of my novels are not fiendishly difficult!). (less)

It’s also a story about sport – in particular ice hockey - but the ice hockey could be replaced by any team... Read more of this blog post »

“Philippa Mitchell was eighteen years old when she left England. She left behind her bedroom, that cocoon of misery in which she’d imprisoned herself; her parents, with their forced, hollow cheerfulness; and the pieces of her heart, smashed to smithereens two years ago with a phone call that came in the middle of the night.”

“She felt the sun on her face, warming her after the months of snow and freezing temperatures. She took off her sweatshirt, tied it around her waist and ran in shorts and T-shirt... she needed some sunshine on her skin, and it felt exhilarating to stretch herself out. She flew alongside the raging river, the rhythm of her strides and the beating of her trainers on the path chasing out the gloomy thoughts that had become a part of her whole being, ingrained like dirt in the creases of her skin.”

“... Nadine stuffed the make-up into her handbag, along with a travel toothbrush, a condom, her passport and a spare pair of knickers. She saw Tiny and Pip staring at her and said, ‘What?’
‘Your passport, Nad?’
Nadine shrugged. ‘I will spend this evening asking myself, What would Anya Amasova do? And she would definitely never be without her passport.”
