Dave enjoys getting lost in the settings he imagines and spending time with the characters he creates. Writing historical fiction is like making paintings of the past. He loves to weave fact and fiction together, stirring in action, adventure, romance, and a heavy dose of the supernatural with the hope of transporting the reader to another time and place. He is an Adirondack 46-er, which means he has hiked all of the highest peaks in New York State, so it should not be surprising when Dave attempts to glorify hikers as swashbuckling superheroes in his writing.

Nonetheless, he walks away from the challenge for a few days in the opposite direction. As a writer I have found the same thing. When I'm stuck, I do something else for a while. I'll let the block creep into my thoughts while I'm commuting, while I'm taking a shower, and while I'm trying to fall asleep at night. Usually within a couple days something will come to me. I also find it helpful to talk about it with an interested collaborator, in my case the editor of my books, who is also my cousin. I have also found it helpful to open a new document and just start typing anything that comes to mind, stream of consciousness style, with no intention for that writing to end up in the story. Another thing I have tried is reading aloud, at a relaxed pace. There's something about saying the words that is different from reading them, or writing them silently. (less)

My favorite part of the writer's journey is feeling like I'm in "the zone"-when the words just seem to spill out. In both of my books there were sections where the books just seemed to write themselves. I think that came from an emotional and spiritual connection to the characters and stories. When someone tells you they were touched by what you wrote, that is the ultimate payoff.(less)

Yellowstone Sparkles In This Clever Time Slip

I have had my eye on this book. The spectacular landscape and the tiny bison on the cover, together with the book description, invited me to put this book on my to-be-read list and compelled me to bump it to the top.

Inside, landscape images add tremendously to the experience of reading the book. I have the book on my phone, and even though they are ver

“Yellowtail is a prominent medicine man. He uses a wagon wheel to describe the world’s religions. Each spoke represents different people and religions in the circle of life. All spokes are connected to the same Creator. According to Yellowtail, everyone has a different way to establish a spiritual relationship with God. And they are all valid. It’s up to each person to choose a method that is most effective.”
