However, after a week or two trying to acclimatize to British culture they get a few rude awakenings and the England they had in mind was not what they had imagined.

On reading the blurb it brought back memories of the stories I was told as a child during a similar time and instantly I felt connected.
The two little girls on the cover of this book is what drew me in and wanting to know more about their story. Second, the title — Orphan Sisters.

I appreciate the style of writing, placing me in the centre of this story that spans over a few decades. I felt like I got to know them very well watching them grow up into fine young women.
The story starts off in Nigeria,that gives us a peek at Nigerian culture and that’s where we meet Lana, Addy, May and Tayo for the first time.

Lola Jaye took me on a journey as she narrated the lives of these two sisters from childhood, their teenage years, their fears, battles, struggles and find love and marking the passing of time with fashion, hairstyles and TV programmes.

There are few baddies in this story that served their purpose in ways that I would not have imagined. Stan, being the least favourite of mine represents those people we meet in real life, but without them we probably would not be where we are today. It was a pleasure to watch both sisters lives evolve into the choices they made and having to learn fast on the go. Lana for example, her struggles eventually shaped her belief system and lifestyle, giving her a false sense of love and that all what she needed was to keep herself busy with work and nothing else. Where as Lana, who I’d say had the bigger heart out of the two held onto so much hope and the importance of finding the truth and the love of having a family.

I could not put this book down, it is really a page turning, visual and emotional read that I have already recommended to friends and family. Although I was not around during these times, Orphan Sisters evoked certain emotions that gave me the sense that I was there. I felt the pain, the struggle, the awkwardness, the hate and prejudice, I got a feel of what was acceptable back then and have heard stories very similar to this from relatives. To read this story through the eyes of Lola, May and their parents, its a reminder to see how far we’ve come although prejudice still remains but not in the same doses. Orphan Sisters is a story of hope, strength and truth. It’s a highly engaging read, beautifully written and I’m looking forward to her next book. ...more "
