There so many authors I've loved and been inspired by, from across all genres! Here are my top four:

1. Catherynne M. Valente. The worlds she creates in her stories are truly staggering and gorgeous. Her word choice and imagery are so beautiful that every time I read one of her books I find myself dog-earring practically every page because there are so many quotes I want to remember. DEATHLESS is possibly my favorite novel of all time.

2. Donna Tartt. I've read THE SECRET HISTORY so many times and every time I re-read it I feel like I discover new details and new ways of thinking about character and motivation. Her writing is evocative and precise and sucks you right in.

3. Meg Cabot. I grew up reading all of Meg Cabot's books and I love her style so much. Every time I read one of her books I feel like I'm listening to my best friend tell me a story. Her writing is hilarious and warm-hearted and I love to revisit her characters and their escapades again and again.

4. Libba Bray. She is fantastic at everything she does! From creepy to funny to fantastical to historical, Libba Bray is all around amazing. (less)

I trained in ballet and other forms of dance for many years and to me writing is very similar to dancing and choreographing. All stories have a rhythm and a distinct beat, and I love exploring that musicality in structure and plot as well as the ways in which the characters move through the world, both physically and emotionally.

Specifically for THE WITCH OF WISHES I was inspired by various fairy tales and myths. I wanted to write my own fairy tale, one that has familiar elements but that is hopefully new and exciting!(less)

Such a beautiful, haunting little book. Thirteen-year-old Maresi's contented island life at the Red Abbey is turned upside down with the arrival of Jai, a quiet girl escaping an abusive past. I loved the way Maresi peels back the idyllic surface of h ...more
