Lay your head, lay your head,
It’s okay if you...

Lay your head, lay your head,
It’s okay if you can’t sleep.
I promise you’ll feel a little better if you just rest your head.
The world is surely crazy,
Trying to tear our souls apart.
Darkness comes, but it never stays
And if it persists,
Then simply open your blinds.
It’s hard, it’s hard,
It’s okay to not know.
I promise you’ll feel a little better if you just take a deep breath and look ahead.
I can sense a busted heart, I’ve seen one plain and raw.
I had to replace its screws and fill it back up with some hope and some lightbulbs.
Took a long while to find the right bits but it seemed to work again alright.
Close those eyes, close those eyes,
Know you’re not alone.
Every thought and every murmur
Will be ready to be heard,
When the time allows.
Maybe I can’t fix it, but I can hold down your fortress with you.

Protection, the marks, the holy understudy,

Protection, the marks, the holy understudy,
The white and ruddy.
I saw over the mountains and I lit up whatever incense I could find.
I closed my eyes and I opened the doors,
I brought the sanctimony to the unraveling and I broke the mold of the ones traveling.
I took a hand and I sang and danced and we laughed and we loved and we got the listening down.
We walked into the battlefield and we held up every physical and spiritual shield we could gather—
All while wearing tears on our face.
I don’t listen to the battlecry,
I listen to the warriors.

Magnified, testifying,

Smile so fondly,...

Magnified, testifying,
drinker given plea.
Smile so fondly,
As you hold your cup.

On The Road book and film review *Spoilers*
I finished listening to the audio book of Kerouac’s highly acclaimed novel, the day before yesterday. It was not really what I was expecting, I had always heard that novel be compared to grand and glorious road trips. To me, this book was not about a grand and glorious road trip, it was about someone learning their way, and perceiving the way of others. That might sound a little anticlimactic but that is truly what the novel portrayed.
The main character, Sal, had a friend named Dean, who was described as a rather selfish individual. I do think he was selfish, but he was also very lost, and uncertain of himself. I feel like Dean was afraid of becoming like his father, and he was afraid of being tied down and starting a family. He liked the ideas of what was in front of him, but he did not like the idea of choosing one option. I think that is why he was the way he was, sad as it may be.
To skip ahead to the ending of the novel, (yes, I realize I am skipping major aspects and characters of the story) I think that in Sal leaving with his new group of friends to go to the theater, and in turn leaving Dean standing on the sidewalk and saying “He’ll be alright” to his girlfriend, showed that Dean was going to finally take responsibility and fix the issues he had made for himself in his life.
As for Sal, I believe he was an observer, he went his way, with caution intact. When he let his cautions down, which he always did when he was with Dean, he ended up in Mexico with dysentery, and it was then that every word that others had uttered about Dean had proven true.
Upon viewing the film, I dare say that I liked it better than the novel. The novel left me with no particular feeling, I was a little underwhelmed by it. The film left me with more understanding. It portrayed the characters in a clearer manner, jumping straight to the point and capturing the atmosphere of the novel to an accurate degree. I do think that sometimes in the future, I will return to this novel, and actually try reading it, instead of listening to it. I do enjoy Kerouac’s writing style, and this is definitely a story that warrants a return to the pages.
So, all in all, I give the book a three out of five, and the film a four.
