Jennifer Dugan is a writer, geek, and romantic who writes the kinds of stories she wishes she had growing up. In addition to being a young adult novelist, she is also the writer/creator of two indie comics. I definitely pulled from that experience a lot when writing Elouise's costume scenes.

If I did work at an amusement park, I think my dream post would probably be running a game booth. I wouldn't want the responsibility of operating rides, and I don't think I'd be good at food service, (I can barely cook as it is!) but handing out prizes all day seems pretty fun. (less)

I also write comics, and am frequently blown away by the work being done in that medium. Being able to draw several similar images, and make each panel compelling, takes so much patience and skill! I'm just constantly in awe. (less)

Great question! I love that picture so much but it did not inspire the book. I actually first saw it when an agent I was querying sent it to me and said my project reminded her of it. (Hope that doesn't disappoint you!)

Absolutely! Each of the jobs I've had has informed my world viewpoint, and directly impacted my writing. I've worked at jobs that I suppose people might consider menial (or beneath them), but I don't regret a single position that I had (even scrubbin See Justin’s answer.

Long gaps of nothing, followed by zombie-like focus where I forget to leave my chair for hours at a time. The best part is when characters start making up scenes for me as I begin to fall asleep. I keep a notebook by the bed!

“I’m not too big for this town, Dad. I never will be.”
Jennifer Dugan, Hot Dog Girl

“I flick my eyes to the spot on her shoulder where her freckles match the constellations in the sky, and I smile. I get lost in her skin, sipping my drink and mapping the stars on her arm while everyone else talks and eats and laughs around me.”
Jennifer Dugan, Hot Dog Girl

“I hold my breath, waiting, because I want something like that to exist, for something, anything, to be the Band-Aid over this gaping wound. And I get it now, I know that's all he could ever be, that's all anyone else could ever be: a Band-Aid, a butterfly strip, a temporary measure, because this is the after, and all the good stuff got left behind in the before.”
Jennifer Dugan, Hot Dog Girl
