Q&A-With Fatima (Bella, an African Cinderella Story)
1.Hi, Fatima, so this is your 15th book within 12 months. What motivates you to write?
1 am very passionate about writing. Since my childhood, I knew that I wanted to be a writer, write books and distribute to the world to make it a better place. I used to make small notebooks by folding a small piece of paper. I would scribble some things and keep. As I grew up, that passion was still burning, so I tried traditional publishing, but it didn’t work. I had many rejection cases, frustrations, sabotage here and there etc. I discovered Amazon in 2010 while in Paris for my Phd studies. I published a collection of stories. But could nt take it to the next level. I was so afraid of getting my real name out there (writer’s block I guess). I woke up one day and already time is gone, I am 43. I felt that the time is now. Thus, I had to unleash the books within.
2.What is the story behind the book, Bella, an African Cinderella Story?
The book is a re-telling of the Classic Cinderella Story with a global appeal. I wanted children all over the world to read and feel that they have been carried along in the story unlike in the ones that I have read, purely European.
3.Your books are usually multicultural in nature. What is the motivation for writing multi-cultural books for children?
I grew up with lots of books, Cinderella, Snowwhite and the 7 dwarfs, Little Red Riding Hood etc.
I look around me now and today’s kids don’t have such books, so I wanted to recreate them with some a global appeal and an African twist to it. For example, using cowries, and other things that African children and other kids around the world can identify with.
4.This is one of ten books about Princesses, any reason for that?
If you read many of the classic stories, Princesses are portrayed as white. Most of the Disney Princesses are of white origin and I wanted to make all the girls in the world feel like Princesses
5.What inspired you to write about Princesses? I was googling about Princesses one day, and I came across a website, The Rejected Princesses, most of them were white. The stories were mostly true Princesses, only two were of colored background, Queen Amina of Zazzau from Kano in Nigeria and a Queen from the Yoruba. And the information about them was a bit scanty. So, I wanted to re-create a collection of stories on African Princesses, even if they only existed in the realms of my imagination.
If you haven’t read the book: Bella, an African Cinderella Story, i recommend you buy it here and read it. The main characters in the story are: Bella, her stepmother, her two sisters and the Prince.
In the story, we found out that in a village in Africa, in the kingdom of Ella, there lived a girl named Bella whose mother died while she was giving birth to her.
The father was very ashamed that Bella was a girl. He has done everything humanly possible to make sure his wife delivers a boy. He visited the sorcerers in the village for help. But, it turned out that Bella was a girl.
What happens to Bella in the hands of her stepmother and two sisters? Can she survive? Will be kind? How will the story end? If you have read the book and have any questions, please let me know by asking me below or send an email with your questions.
I had a wonderful time writing and I sincerely hope that you also do enjoy readin.

Women’s Lives and Challenges-Gender Based Violence
Hello There,
And welcome to this session titled Gender Based Violence. If you have been following up on my publications, they mostly centre on gender; and other issues that affect women and girls. This is something I am very passionate about.
What is Gender Based Violence?: Gender Violence (GBV) interchangibly used as male chauvinism is a very serious issue that millions of women all over the world are faced with on a daily basis. It is a manifestation of power tussle or imbalance between males and females. It can take several forms, such as :
Physical assault (e.g rape, sexual advances, beatings etc)
Verbal abuse
Emotional Abuse
Bullying
Threats of violence
Personality attacks
Financial Imprisonment
Sexual harassment
Social exclusion
Child marriage
Female Genital Mutilation
Human Trafficking
Rape
Female infanticide
Forced Labour
Neglect
Honor killings
Gender Violence can be equated to racial discrimination. Although it can happen to anyone, majority of the victims are women and girls. And in many instances, it goes undetected, unreported or simply considered the norm.
Gender-based violence is a violation of an individual’s human rights, a barrier to economic, social, and political participation. It cuts across ethnicities, religions, cultures, educational level, class, race and international borders.
Majority of gender-based violence comes from intimate partners, and spouses.
According to research, over 1/3rd of women experience physical or sexual violence from their husbands; 10% of these women experience violence both physical and otherwise while in some countries such as the Congo, the rate could be as high as 65%.
Violence against women and girls is criminal and an epidemic that robs the victims of their full potential, resulting in untold human suffering. It undermines the emotional well-being, dignity, safety and overall health status of the millions of individuals, and also the economic stability, health and security of many nations.
The Qur’an says: “
“Treat women nicely, for a woman is created from a rib, and the most curved portion of the rib is its upper portion, so, if you should try to straighten it, it will break, but if you leave it as it is, it will remain crooked. So treat women nicely.” [Hadith-Saheeh Al-Bukhari]
In a similar verse, it says:
“And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them, and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.” [Quran 30:21]
Let us join hands, speak out against and condemn any type of violence against women and girls.

Women Issues
Hello there,
I am Fatima, your favorite author, blogger and motivational speaker. Having talked about Aisha, the bride to be. I wish to tell you that as a woman, one of the main reasons for taking this blogging profession is to relate with and share experiences and stories with women on issues that affect us most; gender-based violence in all its ramifications; family; parenting; relationship management and more.
Having debated with Mohannad on the issue of choice vs destiny, I finally enquired where he thinks my strengths as a woman lies. He said, I think you have a lot of stories; sad ones that you can share with women across cultures, and assist them. He added ”You have a very rich story to share with others; you know that life’s best stories are not the happily ever after types. They are the ones that end up the way yours end up most of the time. I just smiled and quietly moved over to Amal in the bedroom where she lied quietly making a phone call.
I asked her the same question, and surprisingly, she said, “You are very good at critical thinking? And I sincerely think you can make a very good motivational speaker, a teacher; and a helper for other women build their self-esteem amongst other things
That is exactly what this blog represents and stands for.
Please stay tuned for our first topic of discussion on issues that affect us, women and how best we can navigate these challenges.
See you shortly,
Yours Sincerely
Fatima
Choices Vs Destiny?
Hello There,
It is me your favorite author. It is 10.57pm here at my end. Our topic of discussion is on Choices Vs Destiny. Which do you believe in more?
About an hour ago, I had a very long conversation or rather debate with my nephew, Mohannad about choices in life. It was the three of us, myself, himself and Amal both of them in their late twenties.
Mohammed has been wanting to get married for the past six years of his life but his parents think otherwise. Mohannad recounted the number of girls, he has brought home and the same number of times, he got a capital ‘No’ Response.
While Mohammed insisted that life is filled with choices, Amal and I continued to argue that our choices in life are limited.
I argued that if we had choices, we would have been able to choose where we come from, our faith, the person we marry etc. He, on the hand, insisted that we are unable to end up wherever we want simply based on our choices. We got into the tradition of betrothal and how it limits, girls choices, and why parents feel they must be the ones to chose for their children life partners as obtains in the Arab world.
Putting back the question to Mohammed, I asked him if where he currently works is his choice or destiny, he insisted that it was a choice he made. He re-affirmed his stand that whatever, we are going through is a function of the consequences of our decision.
We brought up the issue of Aisha, Amal’s bride to be and the groom. That Aisha had no intention of getting married to her fiancee, but her mother insisted that she must get married to him, even if she will go in today and come out tomorrow, i.e.get divorced the next day. The same thing lots of mothers do over here.
Why would a mother do such to her daughter, marriages are meant to last forever not a one-day affair. Why can’t parents be more concerned about the happiness of their children than societal concerns?
On another hand, Mohannad insists that Aisha still has a choice, to run away before the day of the wedding. Since, she is stuck in there, it means that she already has taken a position. Thus, should be ready to face all the consequences of that decision.
The issue of choice vs destiny, to me, is a very complicated issue. I think we are given choices in life on the non-core issues. But, the main issues in life like, where we come from; when we are born, who our parents are, when we die, where we die and get buried are areas we do not have control over. This was the area that we all had a uniform opinion on.
Sometimes, our choices might be influenced by other forces outside of us; the process to get to the choice destination amongst other things.
Do you believe that the world is full of choices, that we are free to choose the direction of our lives; that life is a product of our own decisions? Or do you believe that we are each part of a great master plan i.e destiny, meaning that there are greater forces defining the story of our lives?
Do you think that our unique journeys have more personal meaning when we choose it for ourselves?
Please leave your comments below on where you stand regarding our today’s topic, choices vs destiny.
